Coming up for air – part thirty three

Bette took a deep breath to keep her temper in check. “I asked for this meeting because I want to hand in my resignation,” Bette stated matter-of-factly.
She watched as the blood drained from Franklin’s face. He clenched his jaw and stared at Bette with ill-disguised anger.
“Your resignation? Is this a ploy to bump up your salary?” he hissed.
“Not at all… I’m leaving, Franklin… it has nothing to do with my salary…” Bette said, remaining calm.
    “You’ve got a job offer?”
“Oh, I’ve had many offers over the years… but this time I was given the right offer… I want to work with progressive people… to show progressive art, Franklin… I’ve found that The CAC cannot provide me with the circumstances to do so… at least not anymore. I’ve been offered the job as Dean of The Art Department at UCLA…”
“The university?” Franklin snorted, “That’s a step down, Bette.”
“That’s not how I see it… but Franklin I’m really not concerned about your opinion. This is my letter of resignation. I plan to stay the month I’m required to… I will make sure that the next show will run smoothly. But that’s it. By the October 1st I’ll be out of here… The board members will have my letter of resignation delivered by messenger later today. My decision is final,” Bette said, looking up at Franklin with a smirk.
“We’ll see about that… I’ll have to look over your contract with the lawyers. I must say I’m disappointed in you, Bette… I thought you had greater stamina than this… giving up just when it gets a little tough… I guess you shouldn’t send a woman to do a man’s job…” Franklin sneered. His face was turning red and he was sweating.

With a wry laugh Bette got up. She looked Franklin straight in the face. “You’re playing the gender card on me, Franklin? What an unwise move…”
Franklin took a step back as if he was afraid Bette was going to come at him.

“When I came to this place it was ruled entirely by men… and it was entirely unsuccessful. I’ve been here for five years and I leave The CAC a thriving business, artistically as well as financially, and it now has a great reputation. The CAC is an institution I’m actually proud to put on my resume… it wasn’t five years ago. I made that happen, Franklin…” Bette said as she took one more step towards her boss, “You better not challenge me… You talk to lawyers all you want. But I’ll be out of here in a month… you can trust me on that one…”
“… I… we’re not done with this… I expect you to continue your work and make the upcoming show a raving success… I’ll have my lawyer get back to you… but I must say I’m very disappointed in you, Bette…” Franklin said, trying to keep up a stern appearance.
“Well… I’ve been disappointed in you since the day we met….” Bette said.

    Comments

    1. You have a “comfortable” writing style. Your explanations and dialogue are realistic, interesting an adult. I wish the show would have this pairing again.

    2. on the show some of tibette problems started when bette began working for CAC so i’m glad that part was over…less stress, more love for them

    3. Loved the way you weaved through all the emotions in this post, Anker! Not many people have mentioned the conflicting emotions that Bette must have felt leaving the CAC. Remembering her progress and successes… there had to have been many bittersweet thoughts. Loved that she is taking Robin, I mean James, with her to the University. When B felt a little unsure after Franklin’s threats, how typical that she immediately finds time to call Tina. It was reminiscent of the night she called him out in his driveway. You mentioned somewhere that Bette has learned her lesson…. well, maybe, but how very Bette it was, for her to realize the anniversary at the last minute, and back peddle as quickly as possible to save the day. Best line (IMHO):”I love you…because of all the wonder you bring me…and in spite of all the BS you put me through…” That definitely is love! Well, until next time Anker, have a great week, and thanks for writing!

    4. Glad that Bette got her two cent worth on Franklin. He has try to unmind Bette from the beginning. Lets get the show over and her at school. thanks so much.

    5. Definitly Bette deserves a better job! and Franklyn will miss her so much because she was the one that gave to the CAC better prestige. Good that Bette did sometime to be with Tina.

    6. Hey you…I was beginning to wonder if I was going to have to PM you to get the next chapter. Then, VOILA…part thirty-three appeared on my screen. LOL! It’s must be bittersweet for Bette to turn in her letter of resignation. To take the CAC from nothing and to build it into a thriving business, must make Bette sad to leave her “baby”. CHange can be wonderful and Bette is overdue for a change when it comes to her job. Franklin doesn’t have a classy bone in his miserable body. He should be giving her the accolades she deserves for making the CAC so successful but instead he makes empty threats to intimidate. What an ASS! LOL! The best part of this chapter was when Bette looked at the date on her email and realized it was their anniversary. She was dead tired but went to Tina’s to be with her and to celebrate their love for 9 yrs. That’s what it’s all about Anker…true love. Makes me smile from ear to ear the way you captured the moment. Beautiful. PS.

    7. Hey Anker, After all of the shit that Franklin poured on Bette I was happy to see her pleasuring Tina on their anniversary. It is wonderful when these gals get together and just follow their desires. Wonderful and passionate writing. Thank you for this morning pleasure. More please. Your Loyal Fan.

    8. Sorry about that, I didn’t fell asleep (although I’m really tired today, it’s hard being a year older LOL – it was a great day, thanks) but the phone rang….and BTW; how could I ever fall asleep to your fantastic writing!!! It’s understandable Bette will do her best and shut Franklin up – I just thank god (and I’n not even religious LOL) that this is her last show. By giving in her resignation she has shown that Tina is her top priority… but right now it must be very hard on Tina…..watching history repeat itselt. Great post, I love this story (guess you already knew that)…and loved Bettes plan, phew that was hot!!! Have a great Sunday, talk soon xx

    9. What’s that about the best laid plans…? Oh yeah, that men screw them up. Good to see that doesn’t apply here… ;) I’m glad Bette is closing the book on her time with the CAC, she’s taken it as far as she needs to, and it kept (it’s still keeping! grrr) her away from Tina. It’s time Bette started a new chapter, this time with a co-author, and hopefully they’ll be having a far better ending. Lovely writing, as always. Thanks, anker.

    10. WOW, that was HOT anker. I can see how Tina was thinking about things not changing, but once Bette is gone from the CAC and working at the university things will be totally better. I know this is going to sound sappy but too bad. True love is a many splendid thing just like the song says. Thanks anker!!

    11. that was a nice plan, all right! tina got a pleasant early morning anniversary treat courtesy of (the very busy) bette. it was a good way to lose some sleeping time hee hee.

    12. UMMMMMM, that was ummm some incredible adult alone time. That kind of left me speechless. They are so in sync with each other. Their bodies and souls are like an orchestra with each having a turn as the orchestra leader. They are able to tweak all of the passion out of their own playground which is the other’s body. Now if they can only make it through this final show and leave Franklin behind in his in own demise of stupidity.

    13. Hey Anker, that was pretty hot!I luved when Tina says….OMFG,I luved the whole chappy! You are….. so amazing…. sigh! I left you a pm back..you took my pm cherry..lol

    14. Anker, That was OMG!!!HOT!!!! Way to go Bette. I am glad Bette is moving on and Tina is doing her best not to give Bette a hard time. Love your writing. Post when you can. Thanks

    15. i’m assuming bette got to tina early in the morning of their anniversary day or did i get that wrong…she sent the email on the morning of their anniversary huh..i sure hope she did; anywayz t loved it….and so did i….more…u r becoming the queen of ‘love scenes’…way to go…cheers

    16. wow fycking wow!!!!!!freakin’ hell superdaddy don’t get all rationale on us…its fiction..lmao…..loved the whole chapter…sweet stuff and so happy u posted…i’m busy work busy…pps

    17. anker, that was marvelous. I must have forgotten to check the rating though, because, for some reason, the hot steamy ‘Happy Anniversary’ Bette gave Tina caught me off guard. Yeah… I’m a little spacey. Anyway, great as always. Frankly, I’m just relieved Bette came to long enough to not screw up something really important! PPS, my friend. And I’m actually pretty sure the darn pleasure is mine! ;)

    18. Wow, a wonderful and mind blowing chapter! I just hope Bette doesn’t continue putting work first before family because Bette can’t afford to lose Tina again.
