Coming up for air – part thirty six

    —–

Bette was sitting in her new office. She’d made it through the first two weeks a The Art Department. She was starting up slow, getting the hang of things before the real work would begin when the next semester began. She had a few months of getting to know people, going to staff meetings, and planning the next semester, ahead of her. Whenever she had a moment she thought back to the weekend she spent with Tina at the spa in Ojai Valley. It had been a weekend of pure heaven, just being together having time to sleep in, being outdoors, and making good use of the night. Bette couldn’t remember why they stopped doing things like that together. It used to be her specialty, whisking away her woman for a weekend out of town, spoiling her to the best of her abilities. But this time it had been Tina – it had been all Tina, and Bette got goose bumps just thinking about it.

“Bette?” Jeremy said from the door.
“Hey, Jeremy… come in…” Bette said and waved him inside.
Jeremy slumped down in the chair opposite Bette’s desk.
“You look beat, Jer…. is something wrong…” Bette asked.
“Charlie and I spend the entire morning at yet another interview with an adoption agency… It is so much hard work, Bette… being judged all the time and having to defend us as individuals as well as us as a couple… I just get so fed up sometimes….”
“How is Charlie dealing with this? Bette asked.
“He has been my rock… but at times I can tell this is getting to him too…. he gets quiet sometimes… distraught.”
“I’m sorry, Jer… I wish it didn’t have to be so hard for you guys. I know you will make great parents… and at some point they will see that too….”
“It’s hard being patient about something you want so much….”
“… yeah, I know the feeling….” Bette muttered.
“Oh, yeah? What are you impatient about Miss Porter?” Jeremy smiled.
“Everything concerning Tina and I…. we’re still not living together… and as long as we’re not living together the whole getting pregnant-thing is futile to even begin talking about… We spent this amazing weekend together up at the Ojai Valley Spa a couple of weeks ago… and it just made me want to speed things up even more… I’m having such a hard time being without her all the time….”
    “Have you told Tina this…?”
    “She knows what I want…”
“That’s not what I asked, Bette…” Jeremy said.
Bette squirmed in her chair, “I told her I want her to move back into the house… but she says she doesn’t want that, but that maybe down the line we could find a new place together…”
    “She said that?”
    “Yes…”
“How do you feel about that…?”
“I want to live with Tina in whatever way she’s comfortable with… but I’d hate to let the house go. I will forever think of it as our home… but if she wants to move, I’ll move…”
“So it’s not so much where as it is when you move in together… you want it to be soon…”
    “Yes…”
“Have you tried talking to Tina about this? She’s a sensible woman…”
“I know she is… but she’s tired of me pushing her… being impatient… She wants me to wait for her to be ready… and I want to respect that…”
“I get that, Bette. But Tina fell in love with you… you have to remember that. Don’t change too much… and if something is troubling you, you need to discuss that with Tina… and not sit around brooding about it…” Jeremy said.
“I don’t know…. I get what you’re saying, Jer… but I’m still scared to death of putting too much pressure on her… I can’t lose her again. I just can’t,” Bette said and took a deep breath.
“Well, if you tell her that, I’m doubting she’ll go anywhere… She wants to be let into that mind of yours… and into your heart of course, but I’m guessing she already knows she’s the one for you…”
    Bette smiled, “I hope so…”

    1. anker….this story is wonderful. I love their dialogue…how they speak to each other. I love their openness. Tina not allowing Bette to push her around and make her subservient. Both clearly expressing their needs. And, of course, their sexiness. It is actually a relationship befitting two grown-ass women. This chapter was perfect. PPS.

    2. It started out with such a sedate pace, what with the Ojai Valley resort and jacuzzis, and I’m thinking, “Sweet! More Hot Alpha Tina! No? Okay…” Then it moved on to a rather serious, grown-up chat with Jeremy about children and houses and things. I can dig that. Jer was right, Bette needs to talk about things and not brood. Then Bette got home, and it was like, Team Drama mounted a serious attack all of a sudden. Cross field pass: Bette is on the offensive, not wanting to make demands, but making them anyway. On to the left wing, past one defender, then two: Bette wants them to live together. Team Sensibility lunges for a tackle: Tina tries to get a word in edgewise. Team Drama skips past another defender, and launches a left-footed volley… Bette wants to be Tina’s wife again. SAVED by Tina, who wants to finally get her say. Parried out, Team Drama picks it up, knocks a pass back, all the while moaning to the officials about handball. Penalty? No… Team Sensibility carelessly gives the ball away with a dreadful backpass: Tina gives the floor over to Bette to let her have her opinion… Team Drama is heading on goal with a full head of steam, dribbles past one, two, oooh, what’s this then? A nutmeg? Bette stops for the shot: Will Tina marry her? Everything stops, the defense is caught ball-watching and Team Sensibility’s goalie drops her hands: Tina says yes. GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAL!! Tina said yes!! And here I thought my Sunday was going to be ruined by that wretchedly dull game I watched earlier. RESULT! Right, I’m done being a goof. That chapter was like, totally and completely excellent, anker. Never saw it coming, but hot damn, it was *ace*. (Wait, that wasn’t for April Fool’s was it? I’m not the poisson d’avril am I? Eh… who cares if I am?) *bouncing* Thanks, anker!

    3. Great chapter anker. I can understand Bette’s impatience OMG can I, but good things come to those who wait. You wrote Bette perfectly because I can just see her saying all that to Tina almost in one breath. When you voice things you are most afraid of happening you find out that it isn’t as bad as you thought. It is never good to hold things in and I am glad to see Bette let them out to her T. Oh and yes my friend if you don’t post another chapter by Wednesday I better not see one for the next two weeks because I believe you will have someone with you to occupy most of your time. Thanks as always!

    4. that answer deserves a kiss….but the ?? is where??? rmao. so where is the ring B. took me for a loop there with how u brought this up. sitting here wonderin if u’ve posted another chapter yet on this beautiful Sunday evening.

    5. Before I forget, Anker, let me mention I was probably too nyquiled out to mention how well written I thought the previous chapter was. You had me totally primed for a luxuriant trip up the gorgeous CA coast. Then the next thing I know, Bette is in her office! Okay, it’s good to keep the readers on their toes! I know I will probably be in the minority, but I’m in favor of looong engagements. However, I would like to see Tina find her way back to her garden, back to the home she shared with Bette. As always, a pleasure to read your posts. Thanks for writing!

    6. First, OF COURSE I’m sulking! And as for the sharing… it was never my strongest suit. Then again, neither was optimism… some things never change. ;) Ok, I’m starting to sound like a terrible person, so I think I better just move onto commenting on the post! :) B&T sharing the same brain wavelength is always so f-ing cute. Thank god I’m not the only lesbian who hates golf! YAY! LOL The ending was… so amazing. I read it at least three times. *Sigh* Just wonderful, anker… perfect.

    7. Did anything actually change? Tina’s still hasn’t actually committed to do anything except see Bette exclusively. She isn’t moving in or starting to look for their place. To me it is a conditional “Yes” without the conditions being spelled out.

    8. This chapter was really sweet…and Bette going right to the proposal… Just one thing, I don’t know if that’s what you’re planning on doing but there are some clues as to B&T having a baby with Jeremy and Charlie or something like that. I might get ahead of myself but I just wanted to say, if that’s what you want to write, I think it wouldn’t work. Bette is too much of a control freak to have to make decisions with more than just Tina. And I don’t know why but the idea seems wrong to me too. I guess I’ll see where you decide to take us, I’ll be there, I really love this story!!

    9. Alpha Tina…..ROCKS! I love that Tina took charge of planning the weekend, insisted on driving HER car….totally hot. Bette needs Jeremy to confide in. He totally “gets” her and we all need a friend that will listen and will be honest with their opinions.(even if it’s not always what we want to hear, right?) On a completely different note…are you a golfer? You mentioned Bette now wanting to golf with Tina and I started to laugh. I have tried so many time to get into this sport and have failed…miserably. I took lessons, bought the clubs, went to the driving range and NADA! Just can’t wrap my head around the damn game….FRUSTRATING! LOL! **okay my rant is over*** Tina saying “yes” to Bette’s marriage proposal was AWESOME! Now that TIna said “yes” to marriage, can moving in be too far behind? Hmmm…..it remains to be seen or should I say, it remains to be written ? LOL! Ciao.

    10. It’s great to have those grand gesters when it comes to asking someone to marry you but when it is spontaneous and comes from the heart as in the manner that Bette just asked Tina it makes it all worth while. Bette laid out her fears and Tina comforted her and then Bette really said what was in her heart. Both are scared of hurting or getting hurt by the other but love can make it work if they allow the other into their heart.

    11. OMG….didn’t see that one coming LOL, great stuff mate. A little disappointed you skipped almost their whole weekend away, could’ve been fun to read wink :o))….but I know you want to get on with the story and the plans you have made, so it’s alright LOL. Think I lived up to my name…you know ‘the fastest slowpoke’ cos I was reader #838 this morning LOL, but you know I wasn’t home last night, so I read first thing this morning, good enough?? :o)) LOL. Didn’t like this post……….I loved it!!! Can’t all be fuzzy wuzzy, they need to talk serious once in a while too – Bette was so cute, who can say no to her????? I couldn’t!!! Glad Tina couldn’t either, but I think the long engagement is a good idea…..NOW give us that kiss, boy I can’t wait for Wednesday (and I know you can’t either for different reasons LOL) xx

    12. Hia back at ya….ok you are just a tad cruel…..Ah in the hotel room, then the door bell and the next thing we know, Bette is at her job!!!!Tease! hah you are a flirt and a tease. lmao!!!Anyways Anker awesome chappy. No more holding out…YOU are over due. OH and you better post before Wed or else!!!! PLEASE..You know I luv ya!
