    Children of the Night 7 & 8

“Agreed, the beer was needed and necessary.”  Carmen was busy drinking the cold soothing liquid and munching down her food.

Shane watched her enjoying her dinner satisfyingly and took a sip of her own beer.

“The people at Wax all loved you!” Shane told her.

“How sweet of them to say that!  I like them too, you are lucky to be surrounded by nice people.”  Carmen said truthfully.

“If only someone else would say that to me… I would die happy.”  Carmen said quietly which Shane pretended not to hear it.

They laid on the rock looking into the cloudless sky, occasionally, Carmen would point out a moving star and asked Shane if that was a comet.

“That’s one!”  Shane pointed a finger into the sky.

“Quick! Make a wish!”  Carmen shouted excitedly.

They both closed their eyes and made a wish upon the stars.

“What did you wish for?”  Shane asked her companion.

“I can’t tell you, it won’t work if I did!  Don’t you know the rules?”

“I don’t believe in wishes.  It’s just fairy tales, giving people false hopes!”  Shane said cynically.

“Then did you make a wish just now?”

    “Yes.”

“If you don’t believe in them, why did you make it?”

“Just in case it works then I don’t want to miss out!” She smiled at Carmen.

Carmen was laughing sweetly at her theory.

“I will tell you what I wish for because I know it’s not going to happen anyway.”

“Really?  What’s that?”  Carmen was intrigue.

Shane turned to face Carmen so that she was supporting herself on her elbow.

“I wished that things could be a little different between us.”  She whispered her confession.

“How different?”   Carmen asked although she knew the answer already.

“Just a little.”  Shane was looking at her face, then her eyes and stopped at her lips.   The distance between them was closing.

Then Carmen’s phone rang, she grunted and answered the phone.

“Ray…  bad timing.  Yes, we are fine…. Stop calling!”  Carmen handed Shane the phone, “He wants to speak with you.”
