Chapter 9 – Tina and the Therapist
Tina: I am so sorry Angie. How did you leave it?
Angie: I said if that is what she thought was best, then perhaps we should. I would not cut class just to have fun for a day unless it were something my parents suggested and approved of. I am fine with hanging out and having fun when my schoolwork is done. But I will not skip class just willy nilly. She hung up on me. So, I do not know where we stand right now.
Tina: I am sorry honey. But you did the right thing. You made the right choice and she’s not a good friend if she trying to use emotional blackmail to make you do something you do not want to do. Give her time to think about what you said, she may decide you were right to say what you said, and she will come around. What you need to do is to go about you day just as you would normally. Sit in the same place you always sit. Hang out with the same people you normally hang out with. Keep your same schedule, study, read and do your thing. If you go through a study hall which she is normally at and she doesn’t show, you should send her a text at the end of period that says something like: Missed you at study hall. Signed Angie. Or however you normally sign your text to her. If she doesn’t show up for lunch, same thing. Missed you at lunch. Signed Angie. Are you planning on going to the library this afternoon?
Angie: Yeah, I was. This is my last day to finish up what I can to have my weekend free.
Tina: Send her a text after study hall telling her your plans to go to the library after school. Include a note that this will be the last time this week. Do not include any emotional words in your message. Do not tell her you are angry, or you are sad, or you are happy or whatever. Try to be factual. You can say you missed her once she has missed being at her normal appointed place to meet you. If she really cares for you, she will respond sooner or later. It may take a day or two. If you get no response by tomorrow afternoon when school is out. Then I suggest that you send her one final text which says: Off to the mountains with my moms. No further text until Sunday night or Monday. See you in school Monday. And then do not text her until she responds to you after Friday afternoon. We will reevaluate things after the weekend. Do you think you can do that?

Thank you so much with the quick updates! Especially since i had a day off from work and a relaxing day to just do what i love, reading.
Angie is such a smart girl, she listens to the advice she gets from Tina and really think about it. Bette and Tina love her and try to prepare her for life. They really have honest conversations with her. I hope Jordi really understand and respect Angies words, choices, what she wants to do to chase her dreams. In GQ i found Jordi to be a spoilt brat, only really interested in what she wanted and that was mostly to have fun and not much else.
Tina seems to have map out the few days she is in NY. I really hope she knows what she wants, she wants Bette but the priority must be that she does what makes her happy. The therapist gave her good insights and advice.
I would have gladly not known about Tina and Carrie their intimate relationship, but you wouldn’t have added that comparison of their relationship and the difference with Bette and Tina if it’s not important for Tina’s journey.
Bette is being so good as friend for Tina, not adding pressure but genuinely offer her friendship despite not knowing if they will reconcile in the future, no matter what, she wants to be someone who Tina can turn to for support.
Great story!
Bibi,
Thank you for your comments. I feel like that you actually are getting my story. And that is a real ego booster.
Angie is a smart young lady. But she is also still young and not very experienced with life. It is hard for a 17-year-old to think that this relationship may not be the last one I ever have. I think she enjoys Jordi, but I do not think she is so attached to Jordi that a breakup would absolutely crush her. And as Bette and Tina point out, they definitely will not be going to the same college. I also think Bette & Tina are smart to just let thing play out as they will.
As to the sex discussion with the therapist? I believe that a therapist would have asked those type of questions of a patient who they were treating with relationship problems. I did try to describe the differences in terms to show the distinct difference in the two women and their relationship with Tina. I hope people remember that Tina is into middle age and being wild and animalistic may not be the desire characteristic of an act of intimacy at least not on a consistent basis. Of course, Tina has indicated that she and Carrie really do not know each very well.
Bette is being very careful not to question Tina as to what is going on in her therapy sessions. Bette wants to respect Tina’s privacy. If Tina wants to disclose something to her, she will when the time is right. After all the purpose of the therapy is to allow Tina to understand why she behaves as she does.
Thanks for the comment.
Really enjoyed this chapter.
It seems Tina is starting to understand what she wants and is planning how to go about it.
Her relationship with Angie is definitely going in the right direction. I loved how Tina spoke Spanish to her when they were alone helping Angie become more confident in the language. How Tina was so considerate, not speaking it while Bette was with them so not as to leave her out. How Angie asks advice, how she confused about Jodi and how she talks it through with Tina and Tina explains thing’s so well with her.
Tina’s revealing more and more with Judith. She is definitely sure where she wants her life to go and who with. She has a hard conversation coming up with Carrie on Monday. I hope she’s ready for it. She is sure she wants Bette and wants to let Carrie down easily but that may not be quite how it goes. Carrie will have lot to say and they will both need to hear each other to get the full closure on their relationship.
I think Bette is adorable! She’s so in love with Tina, she’s checking all the way through this is what Tina really wants. She is very slowly letting her guard down, linking arms, napping together, the kiss at night that’s getting a bit more affectionate each time. Bette is waiting for the discussion with Carrie to be over, to see Tina means it. She will also be there to pick Tina up after the Conversation….. Tina’s going to be with ‘family’ after the Carrie conversation. Peggy, Helena, Dylan and Bette are her staunchest allies and will be there for her…..plus I wonder what Peggy has up her sleeve for Bette, Helena and Tina ??
Janice,
You are very preceptive. Yes, I do believe that Tina has made up her mind as to whom she wants to be with. And she is doing what she’s doing without Bette suggesting the path.
Jordi is being more of an irritant to Angie than a girlfriend. Of course, love is blind particularly when it is your first love.
As to what, is on Peggy’s mind? All will be disclosed by Peggy when she gets ready. But first there is the trip to Bear Mountain.
Thanks you for reading and for taking the time to comment.
