A New Life
Chapter 9 – Tina and the Therapist
Tina got up at her usual time and went through her normal morning routine. She made sure that Angie was up by speaking Spanish to her. Angie’s mind was not quite in gear so she was slow to respond. She responded in English.
Tina: No, in the mornings, you and I will speak in Spanish. When Mama B joins us, we will speak in English.
Tina did not want Bette to feel excluded from the conversation by speaking to her daughter in Spanish when she did not understand what was being said.
Tina gathered the dirty clothes from her room and from Angie’s room and took them downstairs. Tina was thinking about what she would prepare for breakfast. After staring the laundry, she decided to serve some yogurt, with honey, granola, and fruit – strawberries, blueberries and bananas. She decided to chop some walnuts and add to mixture. That with coffee or juice would be a satisfying and healthy breakfast. Once the dish was prepared, it was a soup bowl of yogurt topped with colorful fruit and nuts.
Angie came down fully dressed and looking for breakfast. Tina gave her a bowl of the yogurt and asked her to name the contents in Spanish. Struggled with granola and walnuts but did well with the rest of the words. So that she had it, down Tina quizzed her on various items. Angie was enjoying their game of expanding her vocabulary in Spanish.
Angie (English): Mom, may I talk to you about Jordi.
Tina (sensing that her daughter was asking for guidance dropped the Spanish): Sure sweetie. Let me get a cup of coffee and come sit with you.
Angie: I talked to Jordi last night on the phone. She was not pleased that I refused to cut class on Friday. So, I tried to explain why school was so important to me. And then she said, something that if I really cared about her, I’d cut class. Mom, that really pissed me off. So, I said, if she cared about me, she wouldn’t ask me repeatedly to do something I did not want to do. Well, that pissed her off and she said that perhaps we should break up.

Thank you so much with the quick updates! Especially since i had a day off from work and a relaxing day to just do what i love, reading.
Angie is such a smart girl, she listens to the advice she gets from Tina and really think about it. Bette and Tina love her and try to prepare her for life. They really have honest conversations with her. I hope Jordi really understand and respect Angies words, choices, what she wants to do to chase her dreams. In GQ i found Jordi to be a spoilt brat, only really interested in what she wanted and that was mostly to have fun and not much else.
Tina seems to have map out the few days she is in NY. I really hope she knows what she wants, she wants Bette but the priority must be that she does what makes her happy. The therapist gave her good insights and advice.
I would have gladly not known about Tina and Carrie their intimate relationship, but you wouldn’t have added that comparison of their relationship and the difference with Bette and Tina if it’s not important for Tina’s journey.
Bette is being so good as friend for Tina, not adding pressure but genuinely offer her friendship despite not knowing if they will reconcile in the future, no matter what, she wants to be someone who Tina can turn to for support.
Great story!
Bibi,
Thank you for your comments. I feel like that you actually are getting my story. And that is a real ego booster.
Angie is a smart young lady. But she is also still young and not very experienced with life. It is hard for a 17-year-old to think that this relationship may not be the last one I ever have. I think she enjoys Jordi, but I do not think she is so attached to Jordi that a breakup would absolutely crush her. And as Bette and Tina point out, they definitely will not be going to the same college. I also think Bette & Tina are smart to just let thing play out as they will.
As to the sex discussion with the therapist? I believe that a therapist would have asked those type of questions of a patient who they were treating with relationship problems. I did try to describe the differences in terms to show the distinct difference in the two women and their relationship with Tina. I hope people remember that Tina is into middle age and being wild and animalistic may not be the desire characteristic of an act of intimacy at least not on a consistent basis. Of course, Tina has indicated that she and Carrie really do not know each very well.
Bette is being very careful not to question Tina as to what is going on in her therapy sessions. Bette wants to respect Tina’s privacy. If Tina wants to disclose something to her, she will when the time is right. After all the purpose of the therapy is to allow Tina to understand why she behaves as she does.
Thanks for the comment.
Really enjoyed this chapter.
It seems Tina is starting to understand what she wants and is planning how to go about it.
Her relationship with Angie is definitely going in the right direction. I loved how Tina spoke Spanish to her when they were alone helping Angie become more confident in the language. How Tina was so considerate, not speaking it while Bette was with them so not as to leave her out. How Angie asks advice, how she confused about Jodi and how she talks it through with Tina and Tina explains thing’s so well with her.
Tina’s revealing more and more with Judith. She is definitely sure where she wants her life to go and who with. She has a hard conversation coming up with Carrie on Monday. I hope she’s ready for it. She is sure she wants Bette and wants to let Carrie down easily but that may not be quite how it goes. Carrie will have lot to say and they will both need to hear each other to get the full closure on their relationship.
I think Bette is adorable! She’s so in love with Tina, she’s checking all the way through this is what Tina really wants. She is very slowly letting her guard down, linking arms, napping together, the kiss at night that’s getting a bit more affectionate each time. Bette is waiting for the discussion with Carrie to be over, to see Tina means it. She will also be there to pick Tina up after the Conversation….. Tina’s going to be with ‘family’ after the Carrie conversation. Peggy, Helena, Dylan and Bette are her staunchest allies and will be there for her…..plus I wonder what Peggy has up her sleeve for Bette, Helena and Tina ??
Janice,
You are very preceptive. Yes, I do believe that Tina has made up her mind as to whom she wants to be with. And she is doing what she’s doing without Bette suggesting the path.
Jordi is being more of an irritant to Angie than a girlfriend. Of course, love is blind particularly when it is your first love.
As to what, is on Peggy’s mind? All will be disclosed by Peggy when she gets ready. But first there is the trip to Bear Mountain.
Thanks you for reading and for taking the time to comment.
