Brokens Girls with Strange Frames (Ch. 23)

After a few minutes, Bette leaned over and said quietly, “If it’ll appease your inquisitive mind, I’m not interested in her.”

    “You’re not?”

    She shook her head.

    “Then why-”

“Because,” she said simply, taking another sip of wine, “I can.”

    ***

    “Alice, take it easy.”

“She’s so ***** arrogant,” I groused. “And she’s doing this to deliberately hurt me.”

“Keep your voice down,” Spencer said evenly. We were standing outside The Bette Porter Gallery. The dinner was over and the guests were outside in crowded clumps, heading toward their cars and chatting.

“Al, she probably isn’t doing it to hurt you,” Kyle said. “Let’s be fair-you made it clear to her that you moved on, however much of a lie it was…”

    “Don’t remind me,” I mumbled.

“And now she’s making it clear to you that she’s moved on.”

“Moved on?” I shook my head. “Flirting with a straight girl just because she can isn’t moving on, it’s moving… off.” I frowned, knowing that I hadn’t made any sense.

“So, tell her it bothers you.” Spencer shrugged, as if it was totally a non-issue and I was acting like a neurotic head-case with jealousy issues.

    Oops. Maybe I was.

“I can’t tell her that. Then she’ll think I’m not over her and she’ll start with the pity ***** again. I hate that.”

Spencer and Kyle exchanged a look. I really, really hate when they do that.

“I just don’t understand you two,” Spencer said. “What’s the big deal about being upfront about your feelings for once?”

“You’re the one who said it would be a good idea to make it seem like I was over Bette,” I said defensively. “Make up your mind.”

“I know I said it,” Spencer said with a frown, “but I didn’t realize how far you’d take it. You and Bette make everything impossible because you’re both so obsessed with wounding each other’s pride while making sure your own pride remains unharmed. One day, you’ll tell each other the truth about how you feel, for once, and then maybe you’ll have an actual, real friendship instead of whatever the ***** you’re carrying on with now.”

    1. ugh ALice Alice Alice…Your stories have the strangest affect on me. I laugh, worry, experience melancholy, hide my head behind my cushion, feel ashame and hurt all at the same time and all because of your wonderful writing..

    2. I didn’t know if I had to laugh or feel sad for Alice, it was a great and kind of unsettling chapter…
Please, update faster, I have a plane to catch soon and I wanna have the time to know what happens in the end!!
      xxx

    3. That was an amazing chapter – it seems… true. Your grip on these characters is incredible. Bette is arrogant but that is a part of the package, and people like that are often attractive even when you know you shouldn’t get taken in.

      Alice is wonderful. Period.

    4. So…when does the worm turn?

I am SO looking forward to the skid marks as Tina jets away with Bette’s heart. Bette has a hard fall coming, and I’ll be in the Peanut Gallery, cheering for every minute of it!!!!!!!

    5. She IS hot and she DOES have nice arms and more than that, she and her buddy Alice are so well written. I’m with you on every emotion, Rach, and you’re taking us through a LOT of emotions.

    6. I like your decision not to follow the standard avenue for the Tina and Bette meeting. Alice has such a torch burning for Bette. But I think that in the beginning, when they were in Bette’s office, I think that Bette really did like Alice more than she let on. She just has so many walls around her heart that she can’t just let go. At least, that’s the way it is with Alice…Tina on the otherhand.

    7. I feel so badly for Alice because I know what’s coming, but then again I know Bette and Tina are so much more. Poor Alice I love the girl and it’s going to hurt, but I can’t help but route for B/T !
