Brokens Girls with Strange Frames (Ch. 23)

“So I just need to find a date to your mother’s wedding,” I was whispering to Kyle, leaning past Spencer to speak to him.

Kyle shook his head. “You put yourself in a stupid position.”

“Thanks,” I said sarcastically. “I didn’t realize that. Look, it’s not gonna be hard to find a date-I have two months-it’s just gonna be-”

“When has lying to Bette ever worked out for you? In the long run?”

I gave him a hateful look and straightened in my seat, just in time to join in on some sort of bizarre toast that Max the Insanely Drunk was giving to Catherine Opie.

“To thee,” he was slurring, “who hath perfected the art of photography to an art form-that doesn’t make sense-has perfected the art of photography to a…”

I felt a hand on my shoulder that I immediately recognized as Bette’s. I looked up and smiled at her as she walked past. Smiling, I had discovered, was my alternative to saying: ‘Please don’t touch me because every time you touch me I think of how much I love you and miss you and that sort of thinking kinda makes my brain hurt and you don’t want to make my brain hurt, do you?’

I couldn’t help how my gaze was drawn to her as she greeted a few people and then stood with Eric’s girlfriend. I couldn’t tear my eyes away. There was something about-

“Alice would know. Al?” Spencer was tapping me on the shoulder, but I didn’t want to look away. “Al.”

    I turned, reluctantly. “What?”

“Where did Bette go to school?” He pointed at the art critic, who was looking at me expectantly. Probably writing an article or something.

“Uh, Yale,” I said distractedly, and then turned my head to watch Bette.

Why did the scene before me look so familiar?

Oh. That’s right. I’d been on the receiving end of it one time.

And so had the blonde girl from Milk.

And the blonde girl who was called Tina Kennard was currently being assaulted by Bette Porter’s slow, ***** smile and her habit of leaning in so close you felt you couldn’t think straight.

    1. ugh ALice Alice Alice…Your stories have the strangest affect on me. I laugh, worry, experience melancholy, hide my head behind my cushion, feel ashame and hurt all at the same time and all because of your wonderful writing..

    2. I didn’t know if I had to laugh or feel sad for Alice, it was a great and kind of unsettling chapter…
Please, update faster, I have a plane to catch soon and I wanna have the time to know what happens in the end!!
      xxx

    3. That was an amazing chapter – it seems… true. Your grip on these characters is incredible. Bette is arrogant but that is a part of the package, and people like that are often attractive even when you know you shouldn’t get taken in.

      Alice is wonderful. Period.

    4. So…when does the worm turn?

I am SO looking forward to the skid marks as Tina jets away with Bette’s heart. Bette has a hard fall coming, and I’ll be in the Peanut Gallery, cheering for every minute of it!!!!!!!

    5. She IS hot and she DOES have nice arms and more than that, she and her buddy Alice are so well written. I’m with you on every emotion, Rach, and you’re taking us through a LOT of emotions.

    6. I like your decision not to follow the standard avenue for the Tina and Bette meeting. Alice has such a torch burning for Bette. But I think that in the beginning, when they were in Bette’s office, I think that Bette really did like Alice more than she let on. She just has so many walls around her heart that she can’t just let go. At least, that’s the way it is with Alice…Tina on the otherhand.

    7. I feel so badly for Alice because I know what’s coming, but then again I know Bette and Tina are so much more. Poor Alice I love the girl and it’s going to hurt, but I can’t help but route for B/T !
