Bike Ride, Life Ride Chapters 1-27

Bette was on her bike gently gliding when she thought she heard someone faintly calling her name. She turned her head to look around for the voice. Everything became slow motion for Tina. She saw the car rounding the corner and Bette looking around for her call. She wanted Bette to pay attention to the car that was coming right at her, so she fervently starting screaming and pointing, who made Bette, crane her head further behind her to see why Tina was making such a commotion. Then there was a loud noise, and then the blur of Tina’s face and then faded darkness and silence. Tina saw the car make contact with Bette’s bike and then saw Bette fly over the car and topple over the top of the car to the other side. She heard brakes screeching, Bette screaming “Noooooooo” and the sound of her own voice screaming over top of it all. Tina’s feet were carrying her closer to the wreckage and she saw a woman appear from her car yelling “oh my god!” and asking Tina what happened. At this point, Tina’s screams brought everyone running from the campsite. Shane was the first to arrive at the street and out of breath said “what happened Tina?”

Tina was cradling Bette and yelling “Call 911, somebody get an ambulance, help her, just help her.”  Bette was lifeless in her arms, bleeding and time just stopped for her.  The lady in the car that struck Bette had actually already called 911 and within seconds or hours sirens were blaring and police cars, fire trucks and an ambulance pulled up. Tina didn’t feel anything, but paramedics had removed Bette from her arms, checked her vital signs and got her on a gurney and were lifting her into the ramp of the ambulance. Some man shouted out “who is with this woman, who is coming in the ambulance?”  All the girls exchanged glances nervously and at this point Jodie was there feverishly signing to Tom and waiting to hear what was happening? As Tom was signing to Jodie, Shane stepped forward and pulled Tina with her “She is going with her, she is riding in the ambulance”.  Tina looked distraught and darted her eyes back and forth between Bette and Jodie. She felt a paramedic yanking her and pushing her in a seat and then starting to give her instructions. Before she knew it, the doors to the ambulance shut and the paramedic’s voice was coming into focus. “Ma’am, what is your name… what is your name and your relationship with her?  Just keep talking to her ma’am, keep telling her you are here”. Tina weakly answered “My name is Tina and my relationship is… I love her”.
