Bike Ride, Life Ride – Chapter 39
Tina said “How are you feeling about all of this?”
Bette said “Just when I think I have the solution and have made a decision that I can live with, I can’t. The truth is, I know that it would be easier to just have an abortion. I know that intellectually. Emotionally, I am having a really hard time making that decision. I saw a heart beating. There is like this living thing inside of me. I don’t know if I want it there. I would not want things like this if I had a choice. I seem to not have a choice. I don’t want to disappoint you and I don’t want to lose you…”
Tina interrupted “Bette you aren’t going to lose me…”
Bette said “I don’t know how to be fair… fair to myself and fair to you and Angie and to us and fair to this child who did not ask to be here. Tina, we wanted more children. Did Jodie give us a gift? You had such a hard time with Angelica that I thought adoption was our only choice and here this happens. It isn’t what I imagined and I would not have wanted it this way, but it happened and I feel like we have this chance to parent again. I know that we have not fleshed out how things will work when we get back home and that we have not had good solid couple time, but is it possible that we can work on that in the next nine months? The business of Jodie makes me very uneasy, but I think with Joyce on our side, we could make sure we are protected. I will file a police report with the hospital security and the county police so that we have that documented. Tina, I think I want to keep this baby…”
Tina swallowed. She felt relieved that a decision, any decision was made. She was not sure how she felt about the decision itself, but she promised she would stand by Bette and support her. This was not going to be an easy road, but the road to parenting never is.
Bette said “Tina say something…”
Tina “I don’t know what to say. I am relieved that you have made a decision so that we can begin to plan a path. I am worried about Jodie, but you are right we can keep talking about that and contact Joyce as soon as we can. Jodie is not a mother or a parent here. She has no legal rights. And this baby is a part of you and I love every part of you so much. I think there will be issues that we have to work through and feelings about this, but we will do it together. I am not going anywhere. I am a little scared for all of us”.

YES I AM FIRST, FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE I STARTED COMMENTING. I had just poted a change of decision, to not keep the baby, but as Dainty pointed out, let the character lead you. I am very happy with your choice.
Good advice that was given, to let the characters lead you. Thanks for the update! PPS
Glad they made a decision.Great update. Thanks for posting.
I am glad that the decision has been made. Life will work out one way or another.
It’s a relief to have the decision made. I think it has a good chance of working out with Bette and Tina as parents. As Bette says, it’s an innocent child and not its fault, so more power to them.
i am really proud of our couple and the way they communicated their fears and wishes
I think you did a great job of letting the characters make this decision. I love the way you showed the thought processes that they were both going through. Bette is right…having the abortion may have seemed like the easier way out but in the long run she did the right thing by not only considering her comfort level and Tina’s comfort level. She realized that she is carrying a life inside her….her own child and needed to consider that above everything else.
Ok, so not the decision i think they should’ve made but so be it. Maybe Bette can have a miscarriage or another bike accident….I’m sure there is a way to write them out of having this kid (just a suggestion). Thanks for the update even if the outcome isn’t what i was expecting.
Well we all know, that nothing is ever smooth sailing!!! Maybe a miscarriage in the future or better yet, JODIE BEHIND BARS FOR LIFE in a shit hole of a prison. Thank you for your writing and time.
Maybe it is a gift. I’m surprised you went this way, but I’m happy. Hope Jodi doesn’t disrupt their joy too much.
i am happy with your choice… because when its all said and done… its still a baby, an innocent baby.. that will grow up with love… now they should press charges… and lets hope jody goes away… MERRY CHRISTMAS…
Yes I’m so happy for that decision. I worry for them all but if Bette and Tina continue this type of communication it will work. Having a kid is work and they need to both be there for each other. Great chapter and again thank you for sharing your talent with us all and posting amazing chapters for us to read. Have a great holiday
I think you made the right choice in letting the characters lead you to the decision because you have captured it perfectly. I think this is exactly what Bette and Tina would do and the way they came to the decision is typical as well even though they did seem to have more communication than they have had historically (on the show). I was reminded a bit of their decision to parent Angie together (even sonogram sex – sort of) but what they lacked in that situation is they never dealt with the Candace issue and six months later they broke up even with all the promises and good intentions. Now they are skirting around the underlying Jodi issue. I hope this time they deal with it; being good parents was never their issue it was everything else. I’d be curious to know Jodi’s motive in all this. Did she really think getting Bette pregnant would win her back? or was it just a tactic to break up Bette and Tina? Seems really extreme and bizarre even for Jodi. Also what of the donor – do we know that he’s healthy and having the baby will not cause complications? I’m along with you for the ride – this is very intriguing to me and I’m anxious to see how it all plays out. Happy Holidas.
Excellent choice. I just read both your updates. Thank you. Merry Christmas!
