    Ashes, ashes… Chapter 25/The End

Tina closed her eyes and rested her cheek against the silken strands of her infant son’s hair.  She could feel his chest rise and fall with each breath, and she slowed the tempo of the rocking chair to match the rhythm of his quiet exhalations.

“Hey,” Bette whispered from the doorway.  “Is it okay if I take a peek?”

“Sure,” Tina said, smiling as she blinked open her eyes.

Bette tiptoed across the nursery floor and crouched next to the chair.  “He’s beautiful, T.  He looks just like you,” Bette said, resting her hand on Tina’s forearm.  “How are you feeling?”

“Tired.  And happy,” Tina said softly, kissing the baby’s head.

“Good.  You deserve to be happy.”

Tina reached for Bette’s hand and squeezed it.  “Do you want to hold him?”

“Are you sure?  I don’t want to wake him up,” Bette hesitated.

    “You won’t,” Tina insisted.

Very carefully, Bette helped Tina to her feet, and they gingerly passed the sleeping baby between them.

“Ohhh,” Bette sighed, drawing the child close to her body, and the moment was so familiar, and so reminiscent of a long-ago time, that it made Tina’s heart ache.

“You’re a natural,” Tina said, swallowing hard.  “You always were.”

“He’s so small.  I’d forgotten how small they are.”

After a few minutes, Bette expertly lowered the sleeping baby into his crib, then she and Tina wandered back to the living room.

“He’s gorgeous,” Bette said, taking a seat on the long leather sofa.

“Thank you,” Helena smiled, adjusting a pillow behind Tina’s back and gently easing her wife’s feet into her lap.  “All of the credit goes to his gorgeous mother.  Are you comfortable Darling?”

“Yes.  I’m fine,” Tina said, her eyes shining with love, and peace, and contentment.

“What about you and Nicole, Bette?  Still considering parenthood?” Shane asked.

“As soon as she gets tenure, that’s the plan.”

“Well hurry up.  Big Mac needs some playmates,” Alice said.

“I don’t understand why you’ve got to give our son a nickname.  But if it’s absolutely necessary, must you choose something from a fast food menu?” Helena frowned.

“First of all, no offense, but you don’t really expect me to call the kid Malcolm, do you?”

“That is his name,” Tina offered, raising her eyebrows.

“Look.  When he’s 45 and graying at the temples, I’ll call him Malcolm.  But since he can’t even stand up to pee, I’m calling him Big Mac.”

“What did your mom call your dad?” Tina asked.

    “Malcolm,” Helena shrugged.

“This is going nowhere fast,” Alice said, shaking her head.

“I suppose it is a bit formal for common usage,” Helena considered.

“It could be a little tough for him on the playground,” Shane nodded.

“You don’t need to figure this out today,” Bette reminded.  “He’s less than a week old.”

“Don’t wait too long.  You’ll give him an identity crisis,” Alice cautioned.

“Do you not think that being referred to as a hamburger is going to cause him any confusion?” Helena asked.

“Hey.  It’s not just any hamburger.  It’s definitely upper echelon in the pantheon of drive thru delights.”

The conversation evolved into a debate on the city’s best burgers, and Tina looked around the room, smiling as her gaze lingered on the women she cherished most in the world.  After a lot of work she and Bette had at last found a way to be in each other’s lives that felt enriching and good, instead of conflicted and hard.  And, not surprisingly, the more of her hurt she was able to let go of, the more room Tina had in her heart for true love.  Which is what she had found with Helena.

“You’re awfully quiet, Love.  Are you all right?” Helena asked, leaning toward her.

“Yes,” Tina said, taking Helena‘s hand and lacing their fingers together.  “I’ve never been better.”

    1. Happy to read that Tina gave mothermood another try she deserves nothing but the best and she has seemingly found that with the person she loves and her family of friends. Thanks ffc for another wonderfully woven masterpiece. I have a feeling this will not be your last.Have a great weekend.

    2. ffc that was a beautiful and sad story. i may be wrong by saying this. you write best when you write b&t stories. helena and tina together just dont work for me. she was a good friend to tina, but tina sais it herself that she will alway love bette.

    3. Somehow this ending put a smile on my face. Helena loves and adores Tina, and it just seemed right that they should be together. My other thought was, considering the way S3 is going, better Helena than Mister Man.

    4. Ok, you know this story was hard to read so I’m sure it was worse to write, so I’m not going to give you a hard time for ending it…Actually I say thankyou, otherwise you could have very elequently continued to torture us. You have chosen to spare us and for that I am grateful..I could not have stopped reading it so it would have been challenging…the story not your writing…Pls take a rest and then back at it…..pls most def please!!!

    5. I agree with Gia Marie. I’m a TiBette shipper but I decided to open my heart to your story and I loved it…maybe Tina should try opening her heart to Bette in S3. I hope you’ll start another story in the near future.

    6. this story was really sad indeed, beautifully written but so totally sad…i’m glad that tina and bette are at peace with each other but it still painful when they are not together…i could never imagine that some fictional characters will take such a deep root in my heart, but they did and for me the true love will be always with Bette and Tina…but i love the way you write and i hope to see another story from you really soon (and i secretly praying it will be happy B&T story LOL)

    7. Thank you ffc. Your writing is always a gift to read. I am glad that your Bette and Tina both found happiness again…yet I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face, and an incredible ache in my heart…and for the life of me, I can’t figure out why.

    8. The story ended the way it was uppossed to end. Although I am a big fan of Tina & Bette,it would have been unrealistic in this story for them to get back together. I am glad they remained friends and found happiness. Looking forward to your next installment!!!

    9. oohh I’m glad that Tina found it in her heart to love again and give motherhood another try.. I alway thought Helena was good for Tina and in case Tibette did break up for good the only person I want to see Tina with is Helena..So sad this story has come to an end.. Sigh

    10. I loved how you wrote this story, just wish it did not have to end. There is so much potential for more. Tina is now Helena’s wife and Bette has a partner named Nicole. I would love to read how they got to where they are now. Please think it over.

    11. Even though this story begun with a tragic loss, I was happy that Tina found love again with Helena. For me, it was all about Tina and her getting through her grief and Helena was totally there for her. Personally, I could care less if bette is happy. Although I would have been happier if she ended up alone and bitter…hehehe Great story…awesome writing. I hope you will write about how Tina and Helena finally get together and if it makes it easier you can leave bette out of the story all together….lol

    12. I’m glad they were all able to be happy and friends. But now I’m feeling conflicted. Jesus, does this mean I need to go to therapy? I can’t afford it, so why don’t you write me another story to take my mind of it?

    13. This story was absolutely brilliant! Would have loved if you continued it…but will wait for your next. :) Thanks for having them go through their emotional roller coaster so… thoughtfully.

    14. I’m disappointed and unhappy with the direction and ending. I know it’s foolish to feel this way but in a strange way I feel betrayed. You and other talented authors are certainly entitled to write what you please, but for those of us who connect to lasting love regardless of the dramas in life, these types of endings are heartbreaking. An accomplished author on this site said to me recently it’s only fiction, well for me it feels like much more. I apologize in advance for my ramblings and my less than kind commentary. You are one of my favorites and I flock to your stories. Thank you for writing even when it hurts.

    15. Thank you ffc. This story bought tears to my eyes. *g* Such a beautiful ending! I would also like to add to those who would love to see how Helena and Tina got together! I hope you continue to write more stories, no matter what the pairing.

    16. FFC,That was wonderful and overflowing with love. A minor miracle given the premise of this story. I was hearten to see that good came out of such tragedy. Can’t wait to see were your next story leads as I will follow. Your Loyal Fan.

    17. Oh alright – I think the medicine has gone down with a spoonful of sugar this time. I’m not sure I can accept Helena and Tina and baby as a forever family, but that has nothing to do with the way you wrote the story. You did make it believable, even if I don’t want to believe it.Your’re a terrific writer and this has been a wonderful story to read.Thank you so much for sharing it.As always, I will look forward to anything you write.

    18. I really like that you allowed Tina and Helena to end up together. In the show when I finally understood the relationship if Bette and Tina and not the actress’ who played them so well, I don’t think that Tina should have went back to Bette after her affair because Tina said it best to the therapist Ronnie, they didn’t belong together, and after meeting Laurel, Jennnifer, Rachel at the 2008 Convention in England and watching them interact and realizing that Laurel&Rachel was such good friends, I had wished that Tina and Helena had stayed together. So for me based on the journey of the story and how it person behaved, this was the proper ending. Thank You.
