Art of Love – Chpt 10

    Previously

“My father was British. My mother is American,” I replied. “You’ll meet her, in fact, this evening.”

“How nice. I look forward to it,” she said before pausing. “Are there any other guests besides your ‘Mummy’ and myself?” Barbara then inquired.

“No. The two of you will be quite enough,” I asserted with a smile.

Barbara leaned back against the armrest and returned my smile.

“Here we are!” Bette announced, entering the room with our drinks atop a silver serving tray.

Having received our drinks, Bette proposed a toast.

“To an artful and enjoyable evening,” she declared as we raised our glasses together before sipping.

    Chapter 10

“Bette, Helena, have I told you how enchanting you both look this evening?” Barbara remarked after we’d taken the first sips of our drinks.

Helena and I glanced at each other.

“No, but thank you, Barbara. You look well yourself,” I answered benignly. “What have you two been discussing in my absence?”

“We’ve been discussing how you and Helena met. As well as the guest list for this evening,” Barbara answered, her eyes slowly shifting back and forth between the two of us.

I sat down the serving tray on a corner table and walked over to the divan, sitting as close to Helena, and as far away from Barbara, as I could.

Turning my face to Helena’s, I kissed her cheek.

“Yes, well, then you know we’re awaiting the arrival of Helena’s mother?” I said.

    “Yes,” Barbara answered.

“And as far as our meeting,” I said, taking Helena’s hand, “I can only say it took me far too long to appreciate what I was missing.”

“Yes, indeed,” Barbara smiled. “Helena’s a beautiful woman.”

Feeling uncomfortable, I’m sure, but always the perfect hostess, Helena asked, “Senator, is your drink alright?”

“Barbara. Remember? And it’s Perfect,” Barbara answered. “Single malt, uh?…Dalwhinnie?”

Bette laughed. “You certainly know your Scotch, Barbara.”

    Barbara smiled. “Indeed, I try.”

    Helena squeezed my hand.

“So, Barbara, would you like to begin the art tour?” Helena asked.

“What? We aren’t waiting for your mother?” the Senator asked.

“Mummy is often fashionably late. I think we should proceed with the evening’s activities,” Helena replied. “And I’m far enough along on dinner preparations, that we can eat whenever ready, at least without too much delay.”

    1. OHHHHHHHHHH NNNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!! I came to the end so suddenly that I felt like I was in the twilight zone. You have GOT to post another chapter before 5 a.m. Barbara the Barracuda…..dinner is served Peggy Peabody style!!

    2. Just exactly in what way and to what degree does Peggy know Barbara? I still think this could turn in to a 4-way. Just spare us any Peggy on Helena action.

    3. Barbara the Barracuda and Peggy the Piranha are going to eat dinner together?? Oh, this is gonna be good! Let the Games BEGIN!! Great job, zheese. I can’t wait for the next chapter.

    4. Finished reading all of your chapters by now and I must say I’m really impressed. Your use of vocabulary is so immens that whenever I read a chapter I can add a few new words to my limited one. I love the interaction and playfulness that is displayed in your story. Can’t hardly wait for the conversation which will occur during dinner. I’m now a great fan of your writings so please post really soon.

    6. You know, Peggy holds all her feelings inside. You never really know what’s on her mind. :) In truth, I have an appreciation for people who just lay their opinions on the line. It’s very refreshing. I guess that’s one of the reasons I so enjoy Peggy’s character. And a character she is…
