    Angelica & The Artist – Chapter 12

    Chpater 12

Angelica unlocked the door to her apartment in New York. The flight back from LA was uneventful, but she was still tired from the long trek home. Putting her suitcases down inside the door, she walked over to the desk and picked up her mail. As she sifted through the pile sorting it out, she played back the messages on her answering machine.

Of course there was one from Bette, asking her to call them when she arrived so they knew she got home OK. Angie shook her head and laughed at the message as it played. Her Mom’s were so predictable, always worrying about how she was.

There were a couple from Meg, one from her cleaning lady and one that just hung up. Looking at the caller id there was no name listed and since she didn’t recognize the number she just assumed it was a wrong number. Placing the mail down on the desk, she walked back over to her suitcases, picked them up and went into her bedroom to unpack.

    Earlier that day…….

Holding the business card, staring at the number hand–written on the back of it, Lyndsay noticed that her hands were shaking. She sat on the couch with her phone in her hand contemplating whether she should dial the number or not. As she continued to hesitate she wondered what would happen if someone actually answered at the other end, what would she say? How could she explain? Finally after taking a deep breath she dialed the number.

After a brief pause, the phone at the other end began to ring. It rang once, no answer. Rang twice, no answer. Three rings, still no answer. Finally after the fourth ring, a connection was made…….but it was an answering machine. She smiled when she heard the familiar voice at the other end stating that she was unable to come to the phone, please leave your name and number blah blah…the usual answering machine rhetoric……..then the long beep.

Not knowing what to say, she panicked and without saying a word simply hung up the phone. This was harder than she thought it would be.

A few minutes later she tried again.

Dialing the number again, she once again hung up, this time on the third ring before the machine could pick up. Putting the phone down, she walked into her bedroom, changed into a pair of shorts and a T-shirt, put on her sneakers, grabbed her iPod and went for a run. Maybe that would help clear her head and give her the courage to call again.
