    A Thin Line – Chpt 24

    “Within days,” I responded.

“So that, at least in part, explains your fear,” Peggy deduced. I looked at her questioningly. “This first love, with Tina, that is her name, isn’t it?” I nodded. “Yes, well, because that love didn’t fare well after so soon a declaration, you are afraid to embrace your feelings for Helena and embark on a new adventure at love. Is that it? But, remember, you had many good years with your Tina.”

    I nodded again.

“I suppose,” I conceded. “But everything has happened so very quickly. Forgive me, Peggy, but less than a week ago, I could barely tolerate the thought, much less the sight of Helena,” I admitted.

    Peggy laughed.

“I’m all too well aware of your antagonistic relationship with my daughter, Bette. And I’m sure you are aware of the old saying, ‘There’s a thin line between love and hate.’ The arrows from Cupid’s bow have been known to strike unsuspecting hearts quickly and fiercely.”

Peggy paused to gauge my reaction. I was beginning to feel like one of those bobble-head toys. Again I nodded.

Peggy proceeded with a serious tone. “Bette, my dear, life is short, ephemeral, like a flower. You must seize love when you find it. There are never any guarantees. Just because your love for Tina did not turn out in an ideal manner, does not mean that it will not with my Helena. And I’m sure you’ve learned from any mistakes you may have made in the past.” Peggy paused and searched my face. Then she squinted her eyes and made a grabbing motion in the air, clenching her fist. “Seize it. Seize love, my dear. And tell Helena how you feel. Do not waste a precious moment. Those three words of which we speak are important to say, and perhaps even more important to hear.”

I nodded again as Peggy watched the expression of comprehension overtake my face.

She whispered, “Tell her. Tell her soon.”

At that moment, Helena returned to the table. Sliding into the banquette next to me, she eyed her mother and then me.

“What are you two discussing? Tell who what?” Helena asked, slipping her hand in mine.

Peggy looked at me. And I looked at Helena.

    1. Zheese-More than i love Helena and Bette together, i love that Bette can open up to Peggy and discuss how she is feeling about her daughter. Looks like Bette is already daughter in law material in Peggy’s eyes and wifey material in Helena’s……….smooth sailing ahead (I hope).

    2. Aww. Another remarkable chapter. I do find myself thinking Peggy to be quite capable of all of those words, as I listened to her voice say them in my head. Great great chapter. And the delightful little I love you scene was enough to make me sniffle with happiness. Please keep this up, it’s fantastico.

    3. Zheese this was splendid. I loved Peggy very much and I was glad to see she somehow cares about her daughter. thx for making Bette tell Helena she loved her.

Peggy was a absolute star and acted like Venus in bringing Bette and Helena to a point where they could each declare their truest emotions and admit their love for one another.
