You and Me – (Chapter: Purge and Create Part 2)

“I liked that friend of yours, the one that came over Thursday night. What was her name… Daniella?”

    “Yeah.”

“She was very nice. Very polite. Does she always wear those clothes?”

For some reason, the question sounded absolutely absurd to Spencer but she wasn’t going to wreck the the calm. “Yes she does.”

“Really? Honestly, if I saw her on the street I would think that she was just another one of those gangsters.”

So much for calm. She turned towards her mother with a face that didn’t hide her disbelief in any way. Besides the fact that her mother would’ve assumed right, she blatantly just admitted to judging people based on appearance alone, a habit her father vehemently looked down upon. It just made her wonder further what it was that her dad saw in the woman next to her. “I can’t believe you just said that.”

“What? It’s true!” Paula said in self defense. “Her clothes suggests that she’s a hoodlum but she’s very nice.”

“And if you only saw her walking down the street you would just judge her without even knowing her. You would never get to know how good of a person she is. Didn’t dad teach us all about judging a book by its cover and how its wrong?”

Her mother was silent for a moment. With the satisfaction of making her point, she folded her arms over her chest and stared straight ahead, focusing on anything but taking off her seatbelt and getting out of the damn car.

“Spencer, if this is about Ashley I…”

“WHAT?!” The situation was deteriorating at such a rapid pace that it was making her head ache and her fists ball up in sheer frustration. A once tiny glimmering spark of hope for making amends with her mother was being smothered by the woman’s ignorance and apparent lack of knowing when to shut the hell up. “Never did I once mention Ashley but since we’re on that topic I have something to say. I’m not leaving her and I’m not going to sacrifice one of the best things that has ever happened to me because you can’t deal with it.”

“She is the worst possible influence on you. She’s rude, out of control, and I’m sure a boat load of other things and I will not sit idly by as she pulls you into whatever hell hole she’s dug in for herself with her disgusting actions.”

    “YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW HER!”

“I know her well enough to know that she’s a sinner!”

“Well did you know that Dano’s gay too? That’s right! She’s gay and she’s an observant Jew with a loving home and family who support her. If her mother can deal with it then why can’t you?!”

“BECAUSE NO DAUGHTER OF MINE CAN BE GAY!”

There it was, the truth in all of its dark and calloused glory. There would be no acceptance, not even tolerance. She was doomed to be the pariah in her mother’s eyes, an unwanted anomaly in her nuclear family who would only be mentioned vaguely and when questioned about, her mother would lie and move on to her two prodigal sons. A reject in the worst way, someone who could never live up to their parent’s standards because of one ‘flaw’. “I hate you.”

The car stopped conveniently in front of the building where her psychiatrist was and with tears in her eyes, she ripped off the seat belt and shoved the door open, running into the building with her name being screamed by her erratic mother.

    Ashley. She needed Ashley.
