The Day The Towers Fell – (Chapter: Part One- The Tragedy)
“Take my hand.” Ashley urged, outstretching her palm. Spencer accepted it happily, holding tightly as they began their descent from the 88th floor. Each level more people were pouring into the stairwell, and it became increasingly difficult for the pair to stay together.
An odd smell filled the stairwell, and after a moment Spencer recognized it as jet fuel. She found that rather odd, considering where they were. The smell grew stronger, to the point of being noxious, and soon everyone had pulled their shirts over their mouths and nose to escape the fumes. Both she and Ashley’s phone had been left behind in all of the rush, and neither had any idea of what was happening.
“MOVE TO THE RIGHT!” The shouts from above them could be heard, and the pack of people moving downwards pasted themselves to the wall. To their left, people began filing down, people with disabilities, asthmatics, and injuries. A number of them were burned severely, their skin marred and unrecognizable.
“Oh my god…” The girls spoke beneath their breath, exchanging stunned looks as the worst among them stumbled down to their left. Spencer could feel her heart thundering in her chest, and was fairly certain she was squeezing the life out of Ashley’s hand.
Time was lost as they descended down the stairwell, choking on smoke and clinging to the rails. Water had begun trickling down the stairs, making them slick and even more dangerous. Around the 20th floor lines of firemen began trekking past on the left side, faces grim but calm. It was obvious they were exhausted from the climb, but they continued on, stoic and with no hint of regret.
“We’re almost there.” Reassured Ashley into Spencer’s ear as they passed the 6th floor. The water at this point was ankle deep, and both had long since ditched their heels in favor of going barefoot. Spencer nodded, blue eyes as wide as saucers. The panic had grown considerably as rumors of planes crashing into the towers spread among them.
Then there was another tremendous boom, and once again the building shook like a leaf in the wind. Ashley had managed to grab hold of the railing, but Spencer’s foot had slipped. The blonde fell backwards, and would have continued to fall down the slick stairwell if Ashley hadn’t flown forwards and grabbed her waist. A pain ripped through her right shoulder, but the adrenaline in her system kept her from really realizing it. She hauled the girl back to safety, her heart in her throat. Spencer didn’t have time to thank Ashley as she tried to keep her balance, the sound of the steel beams straining and buckling evoking loud cries and prayers from the others.

Loved this story, I like how they were only coworkers before and their experience brought them so much closer. I can’t even imagine what those people went through that day.
