    The Day The Towers Fell

    Part One: The Tragedy

88th floor of the World Trade Center, September 11th, 2001; 8:40am

“Well good morning Ashley.” Greeted a far too alert Spencer Carlin from behind her desk. The brunette grunted a reply as she sunk into her own seat, huffing a sigh as she flipped on her computer.

“You know, you’ve been working here for almost a month now, you ought to be used to the early mornings.” Spencer spoke, smirking at the irritated look her comment evoked from Ashley.

“Sorry we can’t all be superwoman, Spence.” The girl said, rolling her eyes before shifting her attention to her computer screen. While the two tended to spar verbally most of the time, there was a definite attraction between them.

“Well, having unnatural amounts of caffeine in your system does have its benefits.” Replied the girl, eyes flicking to her screen momentarily before shifting back to Ashley.

“Did you get that memo from Brian about the meeting this afternoon?” The girl inquired, hating that the word memo was a part of her daily vocabulary. She’d never wanted a desk job, but when her internship at Virgin records fell through, she hadn’t had much of a choice.

    8:46 am

“Oh yeah, I-“ Spencer was interrupted by a loud explosion, which was immediately followed by enormous vibrations and building sways. Both girls were thrown out of their chairs, and the floor seemed to have turned to liquid, moving in waves. The building shuddered violently, and it felt as if it was on verge of collapse.

“Spencer, you okay?” Shouted Ashley over the noise as she rose to her feet, trying to steady herself.

“Yeah!” Replied the girl who was also hauling herself up. They both moved to the window, watching in stunned amazement as balls of fire and debris rained down from the upper levels of the building.

“We need to get out of here.” Spencer spoke after a moment, earning a nod of agreement from the brunette before they headed towards the emergency stairwell.

By the time the two had reached the stairs, the building had stabilized considerably. Evacuation had commenced, people descending briskly but calmly. Spencer glanced uncertainly back at Ashley, not wanting to lose her in the midst of all of this drama.
