I feel my heart sink. “I think that’s enough.” I say as I stand up from her bed. “All I wanted was for you to trust me, and I figured this would be a good thing to trust me with. All I’ve done is try to show you that I can be trusted. Not everyone is like him, Ashley. Not everyone is out to get you. Some people actually want to help you and be there for you, and I’m one of them. I thought you realized that last weekend but I guess not. So if you don’t know by now that you can trust me and that I’m here for you then I don’t think you ever will.”

Ashley looks down at the floor and gives out a little chuckle before she looks back to me. “Okay, that was a nice speech and all, but I’m not buying it.”

Again I feel blood rush to my face and fists clinch together. “Really?! What is there to buy? I try to open up to you, something you never do, and you’re just going to fucking laugh in my face about it?! God Ashley, how cold-hearted are you? No wonder everyone leaves you.”

I see Ashley’s jaw begin to clinch as her expression mimics mine. “Fuck you!” She yells standing up to face me. “You’ve gone through life all happy-go-lucky and never had any problems, trusted everyone and never got hurt. But I haven’t had it so lucky okay? I’ve been stepped on by everyone I ever got close to. Every day is a challenge for me and you just can’t understand that so stop thinking that you’re the one who can change me because you’re not!”

“Who said I was trying to change you? I don’t want to change you. Just because you’ve had a hard life then you don’t have to make me out as the bad guy and take out all your ‘hard childhood’ bullshit on me. I’m not going to sympathize just because you’ve had a harder life than me. We had this discussion last weekend about you trusting me and I thought you got it but obviously you don’t. So I’m just wasting my time here trying to have this conversation again.”
