Taking the Long Way – (Chapter: 9: Little White Lie)
“But I am not usually like that. I just went to a party and things happened and I really didn’t want to meet Ashley under those circumstances and it was just crazy how it blew out of proportion and….” I rambled making no sense before Ellen interrupted.
“Oh Spencer….my my, you are just like an open book too.”
“Huh?”
“You really like her. More than friends kind of like, don’t you?”
“Well, uh I don’t really know her and I would really like to try to be friends and…” I stopped myself.
I turned directly to Ellen “She is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen and there is something about her that I need. I just don’t want to make her uncomfortable.” I said with sincerity.
“Why would that make her uncomfortable?” She asked.
“Well you know…because she is straight and you know I like, uhm I like girls. I just don’t want her to feel like I am hanging out with her cause I am trying too]….
Ellen’s laughter cut me off. I was kind of hurt. I was trying to share how I was really feeling about the situation. Ellen must have noticed.
“Oh Spencer I am not laughing at you. I am just laughing at the fact that you actually believed that little white lie Ashley told you.”
I was sooo confused.
“Sweetie, Ashley was gay from the womb.”
My jaw dropped. “But, but, she said…she called herself hetero…” I stuttered.
“She has been through a lot the past few years. I think she is trying to protect herself the best way she knows how. Which is simply denying who she really is to everyone.” Ellen explained.
I nodded. I could understand that.
“How about we keep this little conversation between us? I don’t think it is fair that I “out” my own grand-daughter. Your grandmother and I are having dinner on Wednesday. You and Ashley are invited. Perhaps you will want to work on a friendship.” Ellen said as she started to head out of the barn.
“Ok..that would be great” I whispered. I was still in shock. I had so many questions and one couldn’t wait.
“Ellen!” I called. The petite older lady turned around. “You have always known I was gay. How come you never told me more about Ashley?”
She smiled. “I believe in fate. The time wasn’t right. I knew eventually you would meet” She said simply. “I am not here to play match maker. I just happen to be common ground between you two. It’s is up to you and Ashley to decide how you want it to end up.”
She left me standing in the middle of her barn. It was official. Today had been the craziest up and down and back up again day of my life.
