We got Pearl to the clinic safe and lead her to x-ray where Dr. Blandau was waiting. The x-rays showed that Pearl did have a twist in her intestine. Without surgery she would die, so I called Ellen and told her the options for Pearl. She, of course, wanted us to do all we could. So Pearl went into surgery immediately. Kaylen and I didn’t get to help as that was something reserved for those already in vet school. Although, Dr. Blandau did let us sit in the observatory room. She even turned on the intercom so that she could explain the process and we could ask questions. We both geeked out for the next 2 hours.

It was late afternoon by the time we left Pearl recovering well at the clinic. I called Ellen and told her she was doing good.

As I took Kaylen back to her apartment I realized I hadn’t talked to her at all about how her night went.

“Hey, Kaylen. I am really sorry I didn’t ask you how your evening went. I have been talking about me all day.” I said.

“No worries. Your day was wicked exciting compared to mine!” She replied.

True my day had been a little over the top. “So did you take that cute boy home last night?”

“No we just hung out and talked….I did get a number though.” she said blushing. Kaylen, blushing? Was I seeing things right? Kaylen never was shy when talking about boys….or anything for that matter.

“Well, what’s Prince Charming’s name.” I asked giving her a teasing nudge.

“Aiden…and we have a date next week!” She replied with green eyes shining. “He just moved up from L.A. and is in the pre-med program. He wants to be a pediatrician…how cute is that!”

“Oh Kaylen, no! Not a pre-med!” I said in disappointment. It was common knowledge there was no love lost between the med students and vet students. They thought we were second class and we though they were a bunch of pompous asshats.

“I know, I know but he seems different.” Kaylen said.

“I trust your judgment, but I still have to meet this guy. Sober that is. I can’t have you ‘dating’ some random pre-med with out my approval.” I said giving her my best serious face.
