Prologue: It Looks Like a Storms Coming
My phone has been going off like crazy. I sip on my third glass of wine as I sit on my white sofa. The scene in front of me is surreal. My floor to ceiling windows, which gives me a view of my Olympic size pool and the sky, is all I can see. Can’t believe today is going to be the day I get divorced. I take another sip of my wine as I remember the first time I laid eyes on my future ex-wife…
15 years ago:
“Kylaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!” I scream at the top of my lungs. Where the fuck is this girl? I grab another box from the back of the van. I hate moving so much it isn’t even funny. You would think I’d be used to it though right? Right? Wrong!!!! Nope it doesn’t get easier. I still have to leave the life that was in my old home, my schools, everything.
“Kylaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!” I scream again. The worst part is whenever we move I’m always the one stuck moving all the shit. Kyla is always locked in her room crying because she left yet another boyfriend and Christine, my mother, is always with whatever boyfriend we moved for. I don’t know why I’m screaming she’s not coming out to help.
The box in my hand is getting heavier by the second. Oh my God where is the door. My dad gives this woman too much money. Why can’t we just live in a simple house? I drop the box in the front of the door. I look up at my new ‘home’ for the moment. It’s actually smaller than the last. It’s painted white and is about three stories high. It honestly looks like a mini apartment. I shake my head and turn around to head back to the van of boxes.
“Oh shit!” I say jumping when I see a beautiful blonde standing behind me.
“Oh I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you,” she says with a voice that makes my heart drop. I put the hand that was on my heart down not even realizing it was there to begin with and stare into her crystal blue eyes.
“Um it’s okay,” I say with a smile. She extends her hand to me and smiles.
“I’m Spencer, I live down the block,” she giggles and points to my right signifying which down the block she was talking about.
“I’m Ashley. Nice to meet you,” I say as I grab her hand. As soon as our skin touches I feel a spark of electricity between both of us. I look up and she is looking down at our hands, she felt it too.
“Um do you want to come inside?” I say as she finally looks up at me. She just smiles at me softly and nods yes but as I interlace our fingers to head inside she speaks.
“I really would like to but I have to get back. My mom’s probably bugging out right now,” I feel her break the contact we have and I frown unintentionally.
“Oh okay maybe some other time,” I say in a low whisper. I feel her lift my head up and smile and there goes my heart.
“Definitely,” she says and removes her hand for my face, “Do you have a phone?” I fumble to get my phone out of my pocket.
“Yeah. Yeah,” I say as I give her my phone. She dials something on it and hands it to me.
“Now you have my number,” she comes close to my ear and whispers, “use it anytime you want.” I feel my face turn a bright red, not believing that that even happened to me. No girl has ever made me speechless. Not one! What the hell am I getting myself into? She smiles and starts to walk out of sight.
“Hope to see you soon Ash!” she says as she waves behind her. I watch her walk and I’m still speechless. Wait? Ash? No one calls me Ash? I think I like it. I walk up to the back of the van and pick up another box. I think I’m going to like living here.
Present:
I feel my phone ring again and I look down. Eleven missed calls, Jesus! Each one is from my lawyer. I lock my phone and stare out the window again. Dark clouds are starting to form outside and the sound of thunder echoes in my empty house. It looks like a storm is coming.
