    On the Edge

“You have it bad,” Nick mused.

“You have no idea,” sighed Spencer.  “The thing is that with Carmen, she actually knows who she wants and doesn’t just flip-flop around with girl like Ashley does.  I actually know what’s going on in Carmen’s head.  Does that make sense to you?”

    “Yeah,” Nick stated.

Later on, Spencer was doing her chemistry homework in the library.  Ashley saw Spencer and went towards her.  “I’ve been looking all over for you, Spence,” Ashley began.

“Apparently not all over,” responded Spencer simply.  “So what do you want?”

“To say hi,” Ashley stated with a smile.  “Hi.”

“Hello,” said Spencer looking up from her book.

“I didn’t see you at the cafeteria today,” Ashley pointed out.  “I thought we were going to have lunch today.  You stood me up.”

“Sorry, but I’ve been busy doing homework,” responded Spencer.  “I didn’t mean to stand you up, Ash.”

“It’s cool,” Ashley stated.  “You have reading glasses now?”

“Nope, my regular glasses,” answered Spencer simply.

“I like them,” Ashley commented.  “Did you just get them?  You should wear them more often.”

“No, I usually use contacts,” responded Spencer.  “When I put in the contacts, my eyes felt like I had put sandpaper in them this morning.”

“Ouch,” Ashley said.  “The glasses make you look studious.  So what are you doing?”

“Are we playing twenty questions?” questioned Spencer with a sigh.

“No, I’m interested in what’s going on with you,” Ashley responded.  “So you’re not going to tell me?  Is it top secret homework?”

“No, secret, it’s just stupid chemistry homework,” stated Spencer.

“Having trouble with the problem?” Ashley asked knowingly.  Ashley scooted closer to Spencer.

“It’s a tricky problem,” Ashley noted.  “Don’t be so hard on yourself.”

“I know it is,” sighed Spencer.  “I’ve been trying to figure out the problem.  I really don’t get along with the instructor.”

“You’re wearing lavender, aren’t you?” Ashley asked with curiosity.

“What?” laughed Spencer.  “Are you trying to lighten the mood or something?”

“Forget I said anything,” Ashley responded.

“Okay, if you so,” stated an unconvinced Spencer.

“May I borrow your pen?” Ashley asked with curiosity.  “I have a trick that I want to try out to make your life easier.”

“Sure knock yourself out, Ashley,” answered Spencer.  “It might take you awhile to figure the answer out though.”  Spencer handed Ashley the pen and Ashley began to write.
