North of Somewhere: All Grown Up – (Chapter: In Conclusion…)

    “Spencer…please.”

“So I guess this is where our life completely changes, huh? You sign your big, fancy contract, spend all day in the studio working on your album, and then you go tour the country for months at a time to go promote it. Where am I in all this? It’s kinda hard to have a family under that kind of strain, Ashley.”

“Um…yeah, you’re right. I hadn’t really had the time to think about it…”

“It was the first thing I thought about because having a family with you is the most important thing in the world. I guess you and I are different in that way.”

    “No, we’re not! Look, you’re my everything…”

“No, I believe music is your everything. I, on the other hand, am your everything else and I’m not happy about it. You promised me that we could start a family, Ashley!”

“And we still can! Maybe we have to put it off for a little while longer than planned, but it will happen eventually.”

    “I knew it.”

    “You knew what?”

“I knew that you were lying when you told me you were ready.”

“I wasn’t lying, Spencer! But a lot has happened in these past few hours. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for years.”

“And I’ve been waiting for you for years.”

“I don’t know what you want me to say.”

“Tell me what’s more important to you, Ashley…having a family with me or the music?”

“Why are you doing this? Why can’t I have both?”

Spencer shook her head, “Because I’m almost twenty-nine years old now. I’m ready to plant some roots with you. How much longer should I have to wait?”

Ashley allowed her tears to fall freely, no longer concerned with her pride or looking guilty, “This is an impossible situation.”

“It’s not. I don’t want to lose you, so I assume that means I have to put off what I want so you can follow your dream,” Spencer replied, Ashley’s tears softening her edge.

“We will have a child and we will plants some roots…get a house, be in the PTA, everything. But since I’m completely committed to you I know we have time. I might not get another shot with a label like this.”

“I understand. I really do. I just needed to vent, you know?”

    “Of course.”

“Now come here,” Spencer said, slipping her hand under the material of Ashley’s top.

    “Coming…”

    Three years later…

“Ash, will you hold Glen for a sec?”

“Sure, come here, little guy!” Ashley squealed, grabbing Glen out of Spencer’s arms, “come to Mama Ashley!”

She had taken a job with Enigma, though not the one first offered. Ashley realized that having a family with Spencer was most important to her. But the record label was so impressed with her musical expertise that they offered her a job and in less than three years she had worked her way up the ladder. She loved her job, loved working in the industry and developing final projects, but most of all she loved the little boy Spencer had carried to term six months ago. They named him Glen, of course and he became yet another light in both of their lives.

“We’ve got to be at my Dad’s in twenty minutes for dinner and I’m not even dressed,” Spencer said, pulling on a pair of black slacks.

“From the looks of it, I have to change too,” Ashley replied.

Little Glen had decided to spit up on her crisp, white shirt.

“We’re going to be so completely late.”

    “Spence?”

    “Yeah?”

    “I love you.”

Spencer smiled, in that moment thinking about all the years it had taken them to reach this point. The break-ups and the make-ups, the Lindsays and Erins, the good and the bad. And now here they were, happily stressed and in love with each other and with the life they had brought into the world to love together. It was all too good to be true, but it was.

    “I love you too.”
