“Actions speak louder than words and your actions are telling me something,” sighed Kelly.  “We’re through, alright?”  Kelly walked away leaving me alone in the hallway. 

It was the second time that Kelly did the dumping, except this time she wasn’t cheating that I knew of.  I didn’t feel any tears coming down my cheeks.  My heart was still intact.  I didn’t even care that she dumped me.  It felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders, how crazy is that? Shouldn’t I feel something other than relief? Maybe if Spencer saw me without her, she might be able to forgive me for my stupidity. Maybe, hopefully she will.

I went to look for Spencer and found her working at the library signing books out for students.  I didn’t even know that King High had a library, but then again I rarely carry books with me.  You did learn something new every day.  Spencer looked at me with no emotion written across her face.  “I didn’t even know King High had a library,” I joked.  Spencer wasn’t laughing though.  “Who knew, right?”  She was frowning at my statement.  I liked it better when she smiled.  I hated that I was the one who made her this angry.

“Is this your lame attempt at small talk?” asked Spencer with curiosity.  I nodded.  “What do you want from me?” Isn’t it obvious that I still want to be your friend even though you hate my guts?

“I want your friendship back,” I answered with a sigh. 

“Why?” asked Spencer.  Why?  Life’s not the same without you?

“You make me happy and I can’t imagine not having you in my life,” I admitted.  “You’re one of the most important people in my life.”  Carmen walked towards Spencer and me.

“Am I interrupting something?” questioned Carmen.  Yes, you are.  So go away.

“Yes.”  Spencer looked at me in disbelief.  “No.”  Carmen looked at us both confused. 

“I’ll uh let you decide amongst yourselves,” said Carmen.  “I’ll be there by the Romance book racks.”  Carmen walked away.  I didn’t know that Carmen read either, see miracles do happen.  If Carmen could read maybe Spencer can forgive me.  And what the hell was I thinking when I set her up with Spencer?  Well, Spencer wouldn’t go for someone like her.  Did I even care if she did?

“Give me another chance to make things right with you,” I pleaded.  “I won’t hurt you anymore, I promise.” 

“Ash, it’s a little too late for that,” sighed Spencer.  “I’ve given you too many chances.  What is one more chance going to do?  Break my heart even more?”  I could feel the pain in her words and that pain cut me deeply since I was the one who hurt her heart. How could I do that?  I was supposed to be her friend and look out for her, not hurt her.   Spencer was about to walk away, but I pulled her back towards me.

“Stay here and talk to me,” I said in desperation.

“Why should I even bother?” asked Spencer with curiosity. 

“Because I love you,” I answered.  Did I just say that I loved Spencer?  Do I love Spencer as a friend or something more?  Spencer looked at me stunned and her eyes darted back and forth into my own eyes searching for answers for what I was saying.
