Grace on Fire – (Chapter: The Fury)

As she walked towards the elevators, she saw a woman trip over her own feet and drop her bags all over the ground. She chuckled to herself; it was a funny sight to behold, but then a tall man with a barrel chest, arms the size of tree trunks, dreaded hair past his shoulders, and ebony skin walked towards the fallen shopper.

He had wings with white and grey feathers.

There he was, an angel. One that wasn’t afraid to reveal himself to any possible unfriendlies that might be milling about the mall, an unfriendly like her. He looked impressive enough, wings fully expanded as he bent over and helped the woman collect her bags. If only that idiot knew who that man really was.

She could feel it rising, the fury. It festered and contorted itself within her bones, making the useless heart and blood in her veins pump faster as her breathing slowly began to gain speed. The angels, her sworn enemy, right there before her. His benevolence, his belief in God, his fucking feathers weren’t going to save him now.

A flick of her wrist and the building began to tremble violently.

People were screaming as clothing racks fell to the floor and home accessories shattered into pieces at their feet. Delicious, tainted chaos flowed outwards from her small frame and seeped into the bones of humans who scattered about like cockroaches after a light had been flicked on, adding to their hysteria.

    “EARTHQUAKE!” they screamed. “TAKE COVER!”

Poised amongst the frenzy, she never kept her eyes off of the angel whose wings were blocking the falling debris above him and the screaming woman who clutched her new Fendi bag as if it were a lifeline.

That fear was intoxicating. She could smell it, just about taste it in the air as the glass began to shatter and the cables holding up the large mobiles from the ceiling snapped and careened downwards onto whoever happened to be in range.

    The fury, it consumed her.

With open palms she raised her arms in the air… and there was calm. Then she brought them down, and the roof with it as well. It fell on the angel and his charge, giant shards of glass and chunks of concrete that would pierce and crush the human body.
