Looking down, “Are you guys hungry?”

“Yes!” Louie exclaimed. “Nanny didn’t give us out snake after nap.”

I smiled down at the boy, “Well, I think lunch is in mind then.”

“Who that?” My daughter asked, her speech too advance for her age.

I looked back over at Ashley.

“Ashley, this is Olivia and Louie. Olivia is sixteen months and Louie is three and a half.” I said lightly.

She smiled and waved at them, evidence that she didn’t know how to talk to kids.

I put both of them on the kitchen floor to draw. Crayons and markers was scattered around both of them as they fiercely drawled scenes on a paper. I was always surprised at how both were talented with each and every drawing. Chelsea would always tell me to put the pictures up on the fridge.

Instead I would put them in frames and place them around the house.

I figured when she woke up she would want to look at them, and be surprised every time she seen one she hadn’t pop out at her.

Ashley was leaning on the island, her eyes glancing over a couple photographs in the frame. Each frame held pictures of each child.

I always took pictures…

Maybe I was a good mother after all.

“These are cute,” She said examining each picture carefully.

I put the meatloaf in the oven and nodded to her, “Yeah, I always take pictures. Those are some that I wanted to give to my mum to put in their scrapbook, but I decided I liked it better here.”

She nodded, “So, what do you do? This is a nice place.”

I began cutting up some potatoes to put in the boiling water. “I am a social worker. I work at my father’s offices.”

“Cool, cool. You must get paid well.”

“It’s alright, I can’t complain. I have enough to pay all the bills and some left over, you know?”

“What did she do?”

“Umm…she stayed at home with the kids and was a writer.”

“She write anything I know?”

“Have you heard of ‘Laughter’ or ‘Little Children’?” I asked.

She laughed, “I probably did if I would read something. I hate reading.”

“Oh…what do you do? I mean, driving a Mercedes and living in the Penthouse means something.”

“Trust fund.”

“Oh.”

“I’m also big in the Indie Rock Underground scene. I own a production company.” She said off handily.

“Then why do you work at the club?”

“Oh, my sister’s boy friend owns it and is short of staff right now. I help him out a couple nights and get paid.” She looks at me and licks her lips, “Plus good scenery.”

I smile mischievously at her.

The connection made itself noticed again.

It was intense and heart stopping.

“Mommy!”

I don’t know how long we were lost in that trance, but by the time my daughter pulled at my leg I know it was long.

“Uhh?” I said confused.

“Beep!” She said pointing at the stove.

It was beeping constantly and my potatoes were boiling over.

I slightly pushed her back to her brother and turned off the oven.

I glance back at Ashley, that goddamn smirk still evident on her face.

What the fuck had I gotten myself into?
