Circles and Circles – (Chapter: Got to stop spinning (chap 14))

Spencer took her time forming her reply. It seemed crucial that she get this, just right.

“I need to see her. Because I hurt her. Because I left her hurt, and that’s not fair. I need to make some peace with Ashley. What happens after, I don’t know, but it’s not fair to either of us to leave things as they stand.”

    Riley nodded in understanding.

“She’s upstairs in her studio. If you do a 180 on the landing, it’s the last door on the right.” Riley paused. “Don’t…”

“It’s ok Riley” Spencer reassured her, “I won’t hurt her this time.”

“You might” smiled Riley, “But you’ll just have to make her better later.” And with that cheeky remark, Riley pulled Spencer off the couch and led her to the stairs. Then she disappeared, leaving Spencer thoughtful, anxious, and a little bemused.

Steadying herself internally, she grasped the banister, and then made her way up the stairs. On the landing she could hear soft strains of music coming from Ashley’s studio. For awhile, she stood outside the door, listening to the beautiful voice inside. The song she was singing was sad, mournful, and it’s tones dug deep down inside Spencer and tugged. Closing her eyes, she raised her hand, and then knocked three times, gently on the door.

She heard Ashley’s voice call out, softly, “come in”. And she felt her knees go weak. Bravely, she pushed open the door, and stood inside.

Ashley was sitting in the window recess, on the seat there, guitar strung across her lap. Her hair was loose around her shoulders, and Spencer felt her chest tighten. She was so damn beautiful. She considered striding over there and kissing her.

‘Isn’t that how we got into this problem in the first place…’ the voice in the back of her head pointed out. She briefly considered a lobotomy to get rid of her new found friend, but decided against it. Ashley watched her, uncertainty on her face, and Spencer knew she had to talk.

“Ash” she began, stopping when Ashley looked out the window. Suddenly she had a flash of her mother, staring out the window of her hospital ward. Suddenly she was liquid inside. She couldn’t do this. Even if she wanted to, she couldn’t. What if things went well? What if she and Ashley made something work? What would it do to her mother.

Heart aflame she turned and walked out of the room.

    6. Wow. This is the first story that I ever logged in to comment on because it was brilliant. Sorry that its ending….and on such a sad note. Do things always have to be unresolved does that seem more interesting?? NO. I admit it, I read for happy endings. Life is already unpredictable can’t something just leave you with a smile and not irritation, For that I can call my own mother not deal with Spencers.
