Cheer Me Up Thank You – (Chapter: 3)

    "You’re early."

I turned towards the familiar voice and smiled wearily. "Hi Aiden."

"Hey Ash." He sat down next to me, and I started biting my nails. It was a nervous habit I’d had since I was a kid. "So…"

"Nice office, isn’t it?" I asked quickly. We were sitting in a plain waiting room, nothing nice or extra-ordinary about it. But God help me if Aiden was about to ask how I was.

"Yeah, it’s great," he replied with a sigh, getting the hint. "What do you think of Spencer?"

"Who?" I ask. I think I may be experiencing brain failure. "Oh, Carlin? Spencer Carlin? Yeah she’s nice, not what I was expecting… with Glen as her brother and all…"

Aiden laughed quietly, and I felt a smile tug at the corner of my lips.

"Yeah they’re a bit different those two. Mind you, you never really gave Glen a chance to start off with."

"He hit on me at our engagement party," I snorted lightly. "Second impressions are difficult after something like that."

"I guess I haven’t been hit on Glen, so I wouldn’t know," he joked.

    "Aiden, Ashley."

We both looked up to see Spencer standing at her office door, smiling politely. Aiden got up first and gave Spencer a friendly hug before walking past her. Not knowing what to do, I awkwardly shook her hand, and swore she laughed at me under her breath.

Then we sat down and let the fun begin.

Both Aiden and Ashley were both very civilized as they made arrangements regarding their divorce, which was extremely depressing.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t get kicks seeing couples fight over who gets their Neil Diamond back catalogue. Sure, sometimes it’s a little interesting, but generally I prefer cases that are a little more civil.

But the Dennison’s were something else. They had given up a long time ago, and the weariness, the hopelessness… it was all there. Right in the room with us.

At least with most of the cut-throat couples you can tell that while they were in love, it was a passionate, amazing experience for them.
