After Love – (Chapter: Chapter 2 – Friends Save Us from Ourselves)

“Well, sounds like a good time. Good ole Eddie to get in trouble with. Be careful, Chels, we both know Eddie has a taste for the dangerous stuff.” I could sense her rolling her eyes at me, but she just responded with a polite, “I will.”

We ended our conversation with me promising to visit her in Chicago one day, and her promising to visit me in Los Angeles one day. Neither one of us expected either promise to be kept. I found my way to my room, and went back to sleep.

    Spencer’s POV

“This place has the best sandwiches. I love their Italian sub,” I said to Madison, who ordered something entirely different to spite me.

“So, still trying to change the world one case at a time?” Madison asked with a mouthful of food.

“No, now I’m just trying to win every case so I can one day draw a huge retirement check.” I sank my teeth into my sandwich. I really do love the subs here.

“Well, I’m sorry Spence, I’m sure that you’re making a difference in someone’s life. What did this Bradshaw guy do?”

“He cheated millions of employees out of rightfully deserved benefits. Poor guy.” I replied sarcastically, as Madison looked at me with her mouth open. She wasn’t used to me taking such horrible people on as clients.

“After I won my first hundred cases, I lost the ability to pick and choose. Now they appoint me stuff to do,” I explained. “But enough! I don’t wanna talk about it anymore. I talk about it all day. Let’s talk about you. What in the world are you doing here?”

“Well, I have a new job. I’m working with the Bulls.”

“Wait, the Chicago Bulls? You’re working with the Chicago Bulls?” I asked incredulously. I had given up my sandwich, finding the conversation suddenly interesting.

“Yeah, I’m a publicist. Yay! Anyway, I thought you might still be living in a hell hole, and that you might want a roommate.”

“Madison, I have plenty of money. I don’t need you to save me by being my roommate.”

“Yeah, but do you or do you not live alone in a tiny shitty apartment?” I just stared at her guiltily before starting to eat my sandwich again.

“I’m moving in. Well, not to that apartment, cause I’m sure you haven’t cleaned it in a while, but I’m moving in somewhere. And so are you. So, while you finish your sandwich, which by the way doesn’t look as delicious as you claim, I’m going to grab a paper and look for an available place.”

She didn’t wait for a response. She just hopped up and went to get the paper. I watched her leave, and sighed. I knew resistance was futile. Madison had a way of getting what she wanted. Maybe this would be nice. It’s been a while since I’ve had a roommate. Less staring at the wall.
