Loving Jenny – Chapter 8: The Truth

A week had passed since Jenny and I had given in to each other. Jenny and I had ceased speaking, only nodding in the direction of the other. Carmen kept coming around, but I found myself saying ‘no’ when she asked to spend the night. I was always ‘busy with Alice’ or ‘hanging out with Dana’.

Jenny’s birthday had passed, and I bought her a tiny vanilla cake. She ate it, accepting my card and leaving me a little note on the bathroom mirror: Thanks for the cake, Shane. That was sweet of you.

One morning, I stepped out of the house, leaving Jenny to her computer. I had noticed that she started speaking to some guy on the internet going by the name of ‘superdude70′. I made my way to the next yard over, sliding through the bushes to find Bette on a lawn chair, working on her laptop, and Tina waddling around in the pool.

“I hope I’m not interrupting,” I said, announcing myself. Bette closed her laptop and smiled, shedding off her sunglasses. Tina turned, showing me her stomach. Wow, she was getting big.

“Hey, Shane,” Tina said, smiling, “I’d hug you, but I’m wet.”

“Come hug me anyway,” I said, and Tina laughed, making her way over to me. We embraced, and I locked eyes with Bette, who was sitting up now, her hands folded, hanging between her knees.

    “What’s the matter, Shane?”

“What makes you think anything’s the matter?” I asked, finishing my hug with Tina and letting her get back into the pool. Bette raised an eyebrow.

“You’re standing there like a teenage boy who has a problem. Besides, I’ve know you for almost 10 years now. Talk to me.” Bette patted the law chair next to her, and I walked over, taking a seat. Tina stood by the edge of the pool, folding her arms on the concrete. Bette stayed in her chair, waiting for me to speak my mind. Bette did know me; very well, in fact. I couldn’t hide anything from her.

“Jenny’s not talking to me.” When I locked eyes with Tina, she showed sympathy.

    “Why?” Bette asked.

“It’s a long story,” I said, trying to avoid going into detail.

“I got all day,” Bette said, leaning back in her chair. Damn you, Bette. You know that I’m hiding something, and you want the dirt.
