    Cruise Control – (Chapter: Six)

Spencer stood at her front door, tapping her foot impatiently on Monday morning.

“Where the hell is Madison?” She said, turning to look at Chelsea. Chelsea shrugged.

“I haven’t talked to her since Saturday.” Chelsea said as she snacked on a granola bar.

“Me either.” Spencer said, sighing. “She cut her stupid phone off.”

“I know.” Chelsea grimaced. “Maybe we should try her house or something…” Chelsea trailed off as Spencer shook her head.

“You know her house phone is cut off.”

“Do you girls need something?” Paula asked as she walked up behind them. She looked at her watch and frowned. “You better get a move on. It’s almost eight o’ clock.”

Spencer clasped her hands together and turned to face Paula.

“Today’s your lucky day mom…you get to take us to school!” Spencer said, smiling brightly. Paula winced and shook her head.

“I’m sorry Spence. I have to be in the hospital early today…I’m already late.” Paula said, stepping past Spencer. Spencer threw her hands up.

“Well how are we getting to school?” She asked.

“Where’s Madison?” Paula asked as she opened the door.

“Obviously she’s not here.” Spencer mumbled.

“Why don’t you call your dad over?” Paula suggested.

    “Work.”

Paula sighed and once again looked a watch. “I guess I can be a few more minutes late…you girls hurry up and get in the car!”

Fifteen minutes later, the girls were waving bye as Paula sped out of the school parking lot. Chelsea glanced over at Spencer as they walked.

“So where do you think she is?” She asked. Spencer looked over at her and shrugged.

“Maybe she overslept?” Spencer suggested. Chelsea shook her head, knowing for a fact that Madison was always awake bright and early. “Sick?”

Chelsea scoffed and looked at Spencer. “Not with her immune system.” They both paused as the bell rang.

“Shit.” Spencer said. “Maybe she’ll be here!” Spencer yelled as she began walking away. “Catch you later!”

It was Spencer who decided to catch up with Ashley at the end of class.

“Hey.” She said as she fell into step beside Ashley. Ashley looked up, surprised.
