South of Somewhere – (Chapter: Chapter Five- Hardly Breathe Your Name)
"Spencer! Dinner!” The voice echoed from downstairs although the blonde haired girl was completely ignorant of it. Ipod headphones and Coldplay could do that to you. After a few more tries Clay was sent upstairs to retrieve her from the bedroom where she had spent most of the last week. Not bothering to knock, because Spencer obviously had lost any ability to hear, he popped open the door to find his sister laying on her stomach, looking through some photographs with those little white buds secured firmly in her ears. The expression on her face ranges from small smirks to frowns and even the forming of a tear at the edge of her eye. Fascinated for a moment he just watched her, brows creased together before he finally just sat down beside her.
Feeling the shifting of weight Spencer snapped the album shut, startled by his presence as she yanked the ear buds from her ears, “Oh hey Clay.” A relieved sigh escaped her as she tucked the album beneath her bed and sat up a bit while simultaneously wiping her eyes with the backs of her hands. “Why aren’t you with her?” Clay questioned, perplexed as to why she would put herself through this. It was obvious they both loved each other still, and he couldn’t see why two people who loved each other wouldn’t want to be together.
Caught off guard Spencer hesitated to answer, not really sure of the reason why herself. It wasn’t just to punish Ashley, although she knew that did play a little role. “She has put me through so much Clay…” She began, lifting a hand, “I just need to breath for a while, I need to put things back together for me before I work on putting things back together with her.” Clay nodded, thinking he understood her point. His mouth opened as he prepared to respond but was cut off by their father bellowing up the stairs, “Spencer and Clay Carlin, you are both a part of this family, and you are going to eat with them.” With a smile Clay shrugged, standing up and leading the way out of the bedroom.
Spencer was hoping for some miraculous advice from Clay, something that would clear away all off this fog that seemed to be clouding her mind, but instead was met with nothing. Fantastic. It seemed she was going to have to figure herself out on her own, something that she seemed to do an awful lot since they moved down here. As she stood up, Clay watched her from the doorway, still looking concerned, “You going to be Okay Spencer?” He questioned, his eyes on hers, “I hope so.” Was her reply as she walked past him and down the stairs, meeting the rest of the family at the dinner table.
