South of Somewhere – (Chapter: Chapter One- Rude Awakening)

The first thought to cross her mind as he eyes fluttered open was, Jesus it is bright in here. Of course that revelation was quickly followed by her realizing that not only was the fluorescent light piercing her rather diolated eyes, but it was also lighting up a room far different from her bedroom. A shot of adrenaline rushed through her as she tried quickly to sit up, only to have a piercing pain wrench her side at the abrupt movement.

“Thank god your awake Spencer!” Exclaimed Ashley, who was sitting beside the narrow hospital bed, her arms leaning haphazardly on the metallic bars. Her face looked tired and her hair was disheveled, as if she hadn’t slept in hours, In fact, she still wore the dark and strappy dress that she had dawned for the prom, although the shoes had been discarded and forgotten long ago. A flood of relief had spread through her as she looked down at Spencer, watching those eyes open and the disgruntled look of fear flash upon her face,

Ashley’s voice was a familiar and soothing one as Spencer tipped her head weakly in the direction of the voice. This was so confusing, where was she, what had happened? “Am I in a hospital?” She inquired, finding her mouth dry as cotton and her throat uncomfortably thick. Her recollection of last night was fuzzy, although she seemed to recall being at the prom. How on earth she got here was a mystery, “Yeah, your in the hospital. You were shot in the stomach and the shoulder. Your really fucking lucky to even be alive….” She almost seemed angry that Spencer had gotten hurt, although the anger was not directed at her, “You want a glass of water?”

Spencer looked surprised, her eyebrows pressing together as she tried to remember something, anything. Lifting her hand weakly she reached for Ashley’s palm, softly enveloping it in her own, “I’m so glad you’re here.” She said, meaning every word of it, Ashley only smiled, feeling guilty as she thought to her self, Wouldn’t it be a damned miracle if she couldn’t remember? Reaching for the faucet she poured Spencer a cup of water, all the while never letting go of the hauntingly familiar hand gripping her own.  Leaning forward a bit she brought the cup to Spencer’s lips and tipped it forward, slowly letting her empty its contents.

Feeling the cold liquid slip down her swollen throat was heavenly and the mere act of Ashley being so tender brought a grin to her face as she beamed at Ashley, “Thanks,” She spoke cheerfully, although it still bothered her that she couldn’t remember much. Then, as if out of nowhere, it all came flooding back to her. It was as if someone had unlocked this little pocket of her mind and let all the contents come pouring out as clear as a bell. It was then her face fell from a glowing smile to a look of betrayal and disgust. Her hand yanked out of Ashley’s as she stared up at her, “You-…” It was almost hard to find the words. Her heart felt as if it was being yanked into two halves, and was so painful it made her want to scream. Finally she settled on two words, “Get out.”
