You break it, you replace it – Chapter 5

It was 8pm and Alice wasn’t home yet. Tina had flopped down in front of the TV when she got home hours ago and hadn’t moved since. She was willing to engross herself in anything as long as it distracted her from thoughts of Bette. The current reality dating show wasn’t doing a very good job and her attention shifted to the yellow envelope which now sat on the coffee table. With her mind still screaming not to, Tina lenaned forward and picked up the envelope. It was opened within a second or two and she tipped it up to let the contents slide into her lap.

Tina immediately snatched up an airline ticket. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw Kennard/C Ms printed in the passenger name box. It was a return ticket from Los Angeles to Paris departing on the 17th….this Friday. They had talked about going to Paris but work seemed to always get in the way. She recalled how Bette had told her that she had nearly moved there three months before they met. It was evident that Bette loved the city and why wouldn’t she? Paris is the epitome of elegance and sophistication.

Tina’s mind raced, Bette wasn’t going to give her a ticket to go to Paris alone – of that much she was sure. Her hands trembled as she picked up the neatly folded sheets of paper which were covered with Bette’s neat writing.

    My Dearest Tina

I’ve tried to talk to you but I feel so completely shut down when I’m faced with your anger. I hope that this might be a better method of conveying what I feel at the moment. So here goes…

I lost faith, I lost my way and I lost you. You were so dependant on me, you and the baby. You needed me and I was never there for you, Tina. Work relentlessly demanded my attention and you patiently waited for me to find time to fit you in. You waited but I was never there, not even when we lost the baby.

In all the time we’ve been together it was never so bad as it’s been in the last few months. It was one crisis after another and I just never found a way to reach you through all of it. Guilt began to consume me and I hated myself for not supporting you the way I knew I should, the way that you need me to. I was so scared and felt incapable of providing for and protecting you. It was like I would never be able to support you as well as I should. I was failing you, constantly failing you and began to feel inadequate as your partner.

    1. I’m with DL; I wish I had found this earlier. On the bright side, I can read all of it at once without having to wait for psotings! Hee hee! Off I go to the next chap!

    2. this seems just like emotional blackmail to me. unfortunately, although it puts tina between a rock and a hard place in being forced to make a decision based on whether she really wants to lose bette totally, it also could force tina to think that bette is trying to control her again and just let her go without really considering the outcome.

    3. Wow – so revealing! I love the letter although I consider it unfair for Bette to ask Tina to make that decision. It would likely be based on not wanting to lose Bette to Paris than being ready to forgive her and move on. I really like this angle – I’ll be reading your great writing!

    4. What an excellent chapter this was. So right with Bette and her words. But you can’t let us dangle here. We have to know it Tina accepts, or if Bette is moving to Paris? I am amazed on how many excellent stories that we have going on right now with this subject. Thanks
