What I Want for Christmas – Part II

While Bette had given up on her dream of having the perfect family life with Tina she couldn’t deny the pull between them.  After all the hurt and pain they had inflicted on each other they had managed to become friends again and be good co-parents to Angelica.  They weren’t always on the same page with how to raise Angelica, and at times it had gotten nasty between them, but both women knew that the other wanted what was best for their daughter and that made it easier to forgive and move past their differences and compromise, they actually were capable of finding common ground instead of yelling and cursing at each other.

On Christmas day Bette took lots of pictures of Angelica using all of her cameras, digital, 35 MM and even the camera phone so she could message some of the shots to Tina.  As Bette celebrated the holiday with her sister and friends and Jodi’s friends she couldn’t help wondering where Tina was and how she was doing.  Bette wasn’t the only one.

“Hey Bette.  Is Tina in God’s country again?”  Alice asked.  “She hasn’t returned any of my calls for days.  I have a great Lenore story for her.”

Alice and Tina liked to trade stories of dysfunctional, ignorant and/or inappropriate things their family members said and did.  Tina was still hurt by Alice’s participation in her exile when she was with Henry.  She didn’t really understand why Alice who for years had identified as bisexual would treat her as a pariah for going back to men.  Initially, Tina thought it was possible that it had more to do with the part of Alice that was protective of Bette.  Alice had taken Tina’s side when Tina left after Bette cheated and probably felt she owed some loyalty to Bette, especially since she knew losing Tina to a man played into Bette’s unspoken fears.  Alice believed that what Tina did was a betrayal of the sisterhood.  If Tina had gone back to men after Bette cheated, she would have understood.  Choosing a “boring” man after having the baby showed a desire to live a life of heterosexual privilege and that was not something the quirky blond could get behind.

“I’m not sure where she is Alice, but she’s not on the farm.”

    1. I always find it interesting as to what writers read into the JoBette relationship to justify Bette putting up with her shit..not to mention the lack of chemistry onscreen. I’m glad you put some depth into the Tina character. She has future plans. She has fun on the side when she is out of town without Angelica. I’m glad she didn’t third wheel it with Bette and Jodi.. she is better than that BS. Plus, I like that you addressed the Alice issue. While I hated Tina going back to men I always thought Alice was super immature about it.

    2. madcapper, that was really good…poor bette, its such a frustrating place to be, with those worries about the future. i think you’ve drawn it all out really well. i felt it right at the end, that ‘damn’ feeling and i swear, i sighed along with her! great work, really good.

    3. I look forward to more initimate conversations like the one Bette and Tina just shared. To me that is what a true relationship is built on. Time spent talking about whatever comes up. Tina was right in going off on her own for Christmas, even though she is feels all alone now. It seems that both Bette and Tina feel all alone together.

    4. I have been waiting and hoping that you would continue this story. All of your stories are so well written. Thanks for this–can’t wait for the next chapter! Lin

    5. Bette, they were the worst of times, but they were the best. You gotta take the good with the bad, and with Tina you bad was always made better. Love the conversation between the two, a few more like that should do it. Bette, Tina has not moved on without you, she’s just waiting for you to open up your awesomely beautiful eyes, and see that she’s been right there all along. Jodi, sorry, you and Bette have never and will never have that special connection that make B&T who they are and what we love.
