    Through a child’s eyes

    Tina was behind the wheel while Bette sat beside her.  Dakota was in the back seat with the picnic basket and blankets.  The wind was whipping her blonde hair all across her face, the same as Tinas.  Bette glanced at her and smiled to herself.  Despite her nervousness for the outcome of the day, she couldnt believe how much Dakota resembled Tina.  She used to think nobody could ever compare to Tina in beauty, inside and out, but she soon realized Dakotas beauty matched that of her mothers.  Some ways were similar and some completely different.

     

    Tina slowed the vehicle as they approached the beach.  Are we there yet?  Dakota shouted from the back.

     

    Yes.  Just a few more minutes.  Tina responded as she smiled at her daughter in the rear view mirror.

     

    Where are we going?  Why are we driving on the sand?

     

    Because there are no more roads out here.  We drive until we find the perfect spot on the beach.

     

    Oh.  Wheres the perfect spot?

     

    Right here.  Bette said as Tina stopped the jeep.

     

    Dakota immediately unbuckled her seat belt and bounded out of the jeep, dragging a blanket along the way.  She spread it out on the sand and took her shoes off.  Just as she was heading towards the water, Tina shouted at her.  Dakota, dont you dare go in that water until Bette and I are there to watch you.  Stay at the blanket.

     

    She sighed and flopped herself on the blanket.  Bette and Tina set up the food while Dakota squirmed, anxious to get wet.

     

    Please, mommy can I go swimming now?

     

    Ok.  But only for a few minutes because we need to eat lunch soon.  Tina grabbed Dakotas hand and walked her to the water.  I dont want you going any further than here.  Tina pointed to the bottom of Dakotas belly button.  Ok?

     

    She nodded and splashed in the water.  Tina walked the short distance to the blanket and sat with Bette.

     

    Ready?  Tina asked her.

     

    I was born ready.  Bette tried to hold back a grin but failed as Tina giggled.

     

    Ive heard that before.

     

    Is there any way to be ready for this?

      That was magnificent. Truly from the mouths of babes comes such honesty and genuine heartfelt emotions. Dakota took everything in her stride while Bette and Tina had agonized and struggled about how, when, where and what to tell Dakota.
      You have shown how the simple truth is always the best policy. Brava!
      I applaud your impressive dialogue; it just rolls of the page and keeps everything real and true.
