    Vignettes: Chapter 25

Bette carefully pried the lid off the box. Shane huddled next to her, watching Bettes every move. Bette moved gracefully and calmly though her insides were raw and broken. Shane sensed some apprehension from Bette, but remained quiet, attempting to give her the space she needed. And Bette needed space long enough to remember to breath. This entire night had been full of memories that stirred up a once dormant and cold heart inside of her. Bette wasnt quite sure if she wanted to go through with more of what had been left behind.

Shane looked at Bette who suddenly stopped before taking something out of the box. Her hand held something but in the darkness, Shane couldnt make out what it was. Not sure if she should speak, Shane dared talking to Bette.

    Bette? Are you ok?

Bette sensed the concern in Shanes eyes and let out a low chuckle. Im fine.

    Whats up then?

    Nothing. Just needed to breath.

Youre thinking you dont want to do this, arent you? Shane asked.

    Bette quietly nodded.

I dont blame you. Youve been through a lot in the last few days and opening up this old rusty thing can bring up old wounds. But… will you regret it if you dont?

Bette bit her bottom lip and nodded again. I wouldnt have come out here in the middle of the night if I didnt really want to look in here. And I wouldnt have traveled all the way across the country if I didnt want to be here.

Honestly flatters you well. You should try it on more often.

Bette raised an eyebrow and smiled. Do you see this in my hand?

Shane watched Bette take out an envelope from the box as she nodded.

Inside this is the first letter Tina ever gave me. Its sort of a love letter, in her own way at the time and Ive kept it for all these years. Theres also another letter in here. Its from me to Tina but I never gave it to her. I wrote it just before I left. And here it is, buried deep.
