Vignettes: Chapter 12
Shane shifted her gaze to Tina. So, Tina… I overheard Bette mention something earlier that Id like to hear about. Whats this about a monster under the table?
Oh, its nothing. Tina shook her head and blushed slightly. Bette bit her tongue and arched an eyebrow.
Bette? Is it really nothing? Shane asked.
Well, its obviously something, but it happened a long time ago. Bette replied glancing at Tina.
So whats the big deal then? Alice asked.
Ask Tina.
Tina rolled her eyes and let out an annoyed laugh. I guess if I dont tell you guys youll pester me all week, huh?
Everyone nodded and watched Tina with eager eyes.
***
Tina stood in the hotel lobby and checked her watch for the twentieth time in the last five minutes. As she glanced out the windows, she watched the people walking down the busy streets, skyscrapers towering in the background. It was autumn in New York and the gusty wind tore leaves off the trees, blowing them in swirls along the sidewalks. When Tina finally spotted Bette entering the hotel, a gust of wind pushed her inside as the leaves crunched under her feet. She immediately spotted Tina and smiled. As they embraced in a short but memorable hug, Tina thought she smelled like freshly stripped bark and dying grass all in one. A tiny hand wrapped around Tinas squeezed a little tighter, reminding her that she was still standing there.
Tina picked up the little girl and turned her around to face Bette. There was no mistake this child was Tinas. Her blonde curls bounced with every shift of Tinas protective body and her brown eyes were just as deep and intense. And she was adorable. Bette knew she would be a heartbreaker someday, just like her mother. The little girl watched Bette intently as if studying her, and Bette felt strangely intimidated.
Hi, Im Dakota. The little girl boldy said without hesitating.
Bette was surprised because she just assumed Dakota was going to be shy. But, Bette suddenly realized that if Dakota was anything like her mother, she wouldnt be shy or timid.
