Two Days On Our Own
Two days on our own
Prologue
Shane woke up in the middle of the night and Carmen wasn’t by her side. She rubbed her sleepy eyes and sat up on the bed, yawning. The room was silent, but Shane had good ears and she smiled to herself when she heard Carmen singing quietly a lullaby, in their other bedroom.
Shane sighed silently and stood up, stretching her slender body. She tiptoed on the floor, wincing at the cold contact with the freezing tiles, and walked across the hallway.
The door of the room Carmen was singing in was ajar, and only a thin blade of light caressed the floor. Shane brushed her spiky hair and smiled again. Carmen’s voice was soft and low, and she wasn’t singing anything in particular. She was just humming a song that seemed old and gentle.
Shane peeped in, narrowing her eyes in the warm light on the abat-jour strategically positioned on the nightstand that divided the two cribs.
Carmen didn’t notice her. She just kept on cradling Olivia into her arms. The baby had her green eyes wide open and they were enormous. She was staring her mother, transfixed, sucking intently her little fist in her toothless mouth.
Shane took her time to watch Carmen. She was amazingly beautiful, wrapped in her black nightgown, her long – it had never been that long, as far as Shane could remember – hair down on her shoulders, dark and wavy. One single tuft of hair was partly covering her forehead and Olivia tried to grab it with her free hand.
Carmen giggled, and Olivia’s eyes grew even wider. She was just 4-month old and everything in the world surprised her.
Shane rested her head on the doorframe and sighed, feeling warmth spreading all over her body and raising from her heart, irradiating everything. After all, that was Carmen did all the time. She irradiated everything.
”My tea’s gone cold, I’m wondering why
I got out of bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window
and I can’t see at all
And even if I could it’d all be grey,
but your picture on my wall
It reminds me that it’s not so bad,
it’s not so bad…”
“Hey…”, Shane whispered, clearing her throat silently. She ignored the fact that her heartbeat was growing faster and faster just at the sight of Carmen. She just ignored it, because she was sure that Carmen already knew it. When Carmen looked up at her and smiled that sweet, white smile of hers, Shane was sure that she knew exactly what was going on inside of her.
