Trapped – Short Story
It was Christmas time, it was cold, and I was hungry! Well, with helping in the kitchen and making small talk, I felt somewhat distracted. You see, my friend Victoria invited me over to her house for a beautiful Christmas dinner, and who was I to refuse? After all, it was my second year at university, and I was lonely for some family time (even if it wasn’t my own). Vicky’s mom is a really amazing cook, and when I knew I couldn’t fly home this year for the holidays, I jumped at the chance. It was really nice of Vicky, but she’s a great friend so it didn’t really surprise me.
Just as we were setting up dinner and putting out the plates at the dining room table, I heard some commotion near the front of the house and lifted my head to see that others had reacted similarly. It definitely wasn’t my imagination. Some mumbling could be heard, and then Vicky’s mom yelled out, “Tina’s here!”
I smiled at the joyful squeal hidden in Vicky’s laughter and just shook my head as I followed her out to be introduced.
“Vic,” I heard a woman’s voice as I turned around the corner, and couldn’t help the big smile that crept onto my face. I hadn’t seen my friend so unabashedly happy since … well, I couldn’t remember.
“Ahhh!” Vicky giggled, turning to me with the same hilarious smile. “This is my sister Tina!”
“Hi,” Tina smiled hugging Vicky with one arm and offering her other out to me. “And you are …”
“Barbara,” Vicky interrupted as I shook her sister’s hand. I remember thinking she had a nice, solid hand shake. I liked her immediately because I could see that her smile was sincere.
“You can call me Barb, really,” I chuckled, then looking over to the woman at her side. Wow, she was really captivating. There was so much beneath the surface, and I was instantly curious – like something in her eyes.
“This is Bette,” Tina smiled, gesturing toward the brunette before I shook her hand as well. “Wow, Vic’s forgotten all manners and the rules of a hostess – you weren’t this horrible last year,” she teased, giving her another tight hug before they all made their way into the dining room.
