Thursday Night and All Is Not Well (Time of Day 21)

That was the last thing Bette wanted, an airing of everything in a public setting. Now, she told Jodi in sign. She wanted them to talk now.

Jodi took hold of Bette’s hands, still held in the now position, and shook her head no. She pulled Bette in for a kiss.

Only when Bette didn’t respond as she had prior did Jodi finally come to the understanding that there was something going on, something she didn’t yet understand. “Okay, talk,” Jodi conceded.

All the way across the country, Bette had rehearsed what she would say. “It’s about us.”

The only indication of understanding from Jodi was a nod. A nod and a growing tension, reflected in a tightening of her body.

“I’ve been thinking. I’m sorry, but I can’t see us working.”

    “What?”

“I won’t be returning,” Bette continued. “We don’t have a future.”

Jodi sat down on one of the chairs placed to provide a sitting nook in the room, a stunned look on her face. What? she repeated.

    “I’m sorry,” Bette said.

Jodi just shut her eyes and looked away.

Kneeling before her, Bette touched Jodi lightly on the knee, getting her attention. I’m sorry, she signed.

    No!

    I can’t…

    “No!”

It won’t work. “I’m in California, you’re everywhere. I can’t be what you need.”

At the last words, Jodi jumped up from the seat. “Don’t tell me what I need!”

    I’m sorry.

“Don’t you fucking tell me you’re sorry!”

It was then that the invectives began in earnest. “Fuck you!”

Bette stood there, taking it. She felt on some level she deserved the vitriol. She knew on another level that once this was over, it was over, and she could go home. Move on.

    “Fuck you!”

Bette exhaled, keeping her temper in check. “Jodi, please.” She took a step closer.

“No! No!” The smaller woman backed away. “Fuck you!” The words were both spoken and signed. With equal force and emphasis.

Unwilling to actively defend herself, Bette seated herself in the other chair and wiped at the tears tracing down her cheeks.

Then, momentarily, Jodi was silent. She had stopped moving, stopped speaking, stopped signing.

Instead, she just stood before Bette, hands on her hips. “Who is she?” she said, finally.

    “What?”

    “Who. Tell me.”

“It’s no one.” Fuck! Bette thought. She hadn’t wanted to get into this. Was it really only Tina? Or was this the right thing regardless?

    “Liar.”

Again Bette sat still and just took whatever was directed at her, eyes diverted towards the floor.

    “Liar!”

With the last statement out, Jodi walked through the door of the room, slamming it shut.

Although the room was silent, the echoes of the words flung at her resonated through Bette’s thoughts.

She sat in the room, silent, mostly unmoving, for close to an hour.

Then she got on her PDA and changed her return ticket to the redeye, that night. If she left now she could just make the return trip to the airport.

There was no sense of relief that this task was over, but a small glimmer of hope came from the knowledge that now, she was going home.

    1. If Jodie had really loved Bette it would have been different. Bette in later might have fallen madly in love with Jodie, This was just a stopping off place for both of them. Just a rest stop on the highway of life. thanks

    2. Gotta get back do I doGotta get back do I do I doGotta get back do I doButterflies take control mewhy’s this airplane go so slowlyFlutter faster take me home to you

    3. Others have said it, and I agree…(when you are late in reading, it is sometimes difficult to have an original thought), but I think that Bette should go home and take her time with Tina. To rush in too quickly after the bloodbath they have been through would be disasterous. Also, I think Bette should have been honest with Jodi, sure it would suck to know she is leaving her for an ex, but there might be comfort in knowing it never really had a chance due to the previous relationship. Psued…thanks for your dedication to this story! It is truely enjoyable and I have come to look forward to it daily…write on!!!

    4. Pseud, That was tense and awkward but break-ups often are. I do sense that Bette is now following her heart and beginning to realize who comletes her mind, body and soul. Bette wnats a lover for the long haul. She needs to belong to a family unit. Tina is there for her and now ready to do what it will take to reunite and rekindle their romantic relationship. All partnerships require hard work and compromise. This time apart has focussed the gals onto who and what will work for them. Now just get Bette home and the fireworks to launch. Many thanks for sharing this awesome adventure with me. Your Loyal Fan.

    5. You made a good choice in having Bette break up w/Jodi face to face. From what we’ve seen in the show its consistant with Bette’s character _not_ to do it over the phone. (Candace, Nadia) But I don’t envy her doing two cross-country flights in one day. ;-)

    6. Well, Bette handled that a bit more supinely than I thought she would. Tina =/= “no one”, and breaking up with Jodi was certainly the right thing to do, cos B wasn’t truly in love with her. Why let a relationship limp along, just for the sake of having “won”? Tina challenged Bette to fix it, and she’s done that, sorta. She only had to break something along the way. Ah well, B’s going home, anyway… We’ll see what’s waiting for her there. Splendid, pseud. Thanks

    7. Jodi maybe gone(good thing). I do not think Bette will go straight to Tina. But what do I know. I think she neeeds time to herself and with her daughter. Thanks PPS

    8. That was rather blunt wasn’t it? Maybe Bette should have told Jodi that it was Tina and that it was always Tina. But either way I liked this. Bette needs to take some time with herself before she goes head tilt after Tina. Great as always.

    9. While this probably clears the path back to Tina (the longest journey begins with the first step), even if that weren’t so, good riddance to Jodi. An utterly pathetic liason of which Bette should eternally be ashamed. Well, OK, so maybe that’s a bit strong, but I think I’ve already made clear my feelings that Jodi was no one for anyone desiring an actual relationship instead of a fuck at her (Jodi’s) convenience.

    10. I might be first. Hmm. Well. I’m glad its over. I hope Bette processes a little on the way home. I can’t wait for her to get with Tina.. but I don’t want her to be confused when she does it. Ohh, yeah, again, really glad she finally dumped Jodi. PPS.
