The Way We Were Part 2

The sky started to grey, a signal that it would be raining soon. But it didn’t really matter to her at all. Holding a bouquet of flowers on one hand, she had been staring at the object in front of her for quite sometime. The place was still well maintained after all these years, with flowers grew around it.  She still remembered the last time she visited the place. Ten years ago she left this place heart broken and vowed never to return again. But who knew years later she was there looking at the very object that once meant so much to her. Maybe it was predestined; or God had something up for her, she didn’t know.

She squatted down to put the flowers on the ground and brought her hand to the engravings on the grey tombstone. Fighting hard to prevent the tears from spilling, she forced a smile. I’m sorry it took so long for me to come here, she whispered. But I’m here now. She caressed the engravings mindlessly and before she knew it, it was already drizzling.

She stood up and walked a few steps backwards. She stared at the tombstone for one last time before she turned around to leave the place.  As she walked down the rows of tombstones towards the exits, all the old memories came flowing back into her mind. She exhaled and closed her eyes, revealing the feel of the rains on her skin. Those memories; it was the thing that she treasured her whole life. But it was also the thing she had chosen to forget.
