The Very Thought of You, Chapter 4

We took quite a few family vacations over the years, nothing terribly special.  Three trips to Disney World, one to Disneyland, a trip to California, a couple to Niagara Falls, one to the Grand Canyon, Mt. Rushmore, two to New York City, and a half dozen or so to Mackinac Island.  There were weekend trips to the Finger Lakes Region as well as day trips to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Henry liked the nature trips where we’d go hiking or fishing, the children imagination stirring places like Disney World or Land, but I loved Mackinac Island.  A small island between the Upper Peninsula and mainland of Michigan, this place held magic.  It’s eight and a half miles in circumference, and not a motorized vehicle resides on the island other than a smattering of emergency vehicles.  Your typical tourist attractions have encroached on its historical atmosphere, fudge shops, a butterfly house, souvenir shops, but at night, after the last ferry takes the day tourists back to the mainland, the island seems to crawl with spirits.  The imposing, white fort on the hill comes alive with the ghosts of soldiers long dead.  The fading echoes of hundreds of horse foot falls bounce off the buildings, and you can almost hear the swishing of hoop skirts.

The hotels are buildings erected over a hundred years ago, one a former lake home, one a mission base, and the last a resort.  The Grand Hotel.  It has the longest open porch in the world, I think, and the furniture inside is original to the period.  Horse drawn carriages pull up to the front door.  The pool set into the front lawn was built for a movie starring swimming star Esther Williams.  It’s no wonder a film about time travel was also shot here; you cannot step foot on the grounds without feeling the tug of over a hundred years of guests and lives.

Mackinac Island is one of the few places I take mental vacations to in my daydreams.  Warm summer days when I just can’t take the smell of twenty neighborhood grills firing up coupled with the jabbering of the neighborhood get together, I close my eyes and once again I smell the potent aroma of enormous lilac bushes blended with that of horses.  I hear the ding of bicycle bells and can see the deep blues of lakes Michigan and Superior laid out in front of the wedding cake houses that set on the rocky bluff of the island.  I find peace there.  It’s been a long while since we’ve been to visit.

    1. *Sigh*… there seems to be a lot of lost love in this story… so sad when an opportunity for that great love slips away. I’m hoping it’s not too late for our favorite couple – see? even in this story I still see Bette and Tina as a couple. I love this, NY… pps.

    2. Wow, Ny. I think you are writing a story about me. Lol. Keep writing, the funny thing is i dont read things about Bette and Tina but you have definately caught my eye.!!!!!

    3. That Bette would get over her phone thing to call Tina says a lot about how Bette felt. They just haven’t said it to each other yet. Thanks for the chapter, NY, I’m loving this so far.

    4. I can relate to this story so much… being married and having those intense feelings for someone you haven’t even met, the thinking of that person from down to dusk… well we did meet…, and nearly seven years on, we’re still very much together!
