«Bette, you fucked up good…». Alice was sitting in The Planet with Bette and Shane, feeling depressed and miserable.
«Jesus, Alice, how the fuck could I have known that the woman I brought home last night was Miss Kennard’s friend ? Do you think I’m stupid ?»
«Did she tell you how much the fine would be ?», Shane asked, sipping a beer.
Bette put her face in her hands. «No, she didn’t and I didn’t ask», she muttered.
«You’ll have to call her tomorrow to find out…», Alice said to Bette.
«And why am I the one calling her ? We’re all in this together, do I have to remind you ? I don’t have to deal with this shit all by myself»
«You seem to forget that you were the one who insisted that we open anyway and you are the one who slept with her friend», Alice shouted.
«OK Alice, you win, I’ll call her tomorrow and see how much trouble we are in. Happy? Lock up will you, I’m going home…», Bette said, grabbing her purse.
The next day, Bette tried to reach Tina, but she all she could do was leave a message on her voice mail. Tina called back a few hours later. «My friends wanted to know how much trouble we’re in because of last night»
«Like I said, there will be a fine to pay», Tina replied.
«How much will it be ?»
«About two thousand dollars»
«Two thousand dollars for a few lousy hours ? What the fuck are you thinking ?»
«I’m not the one making the rules Miss Porter, but you keep this attitude and I could make it a lot higher».
«OK, OK, I’m sorry… We’ll fill our application for the zoning today and we’ll wait to hear from you…». Bette hung up. She was about to head out to The Planet and tell her friends about the phone call, when there was a knock on the door. It was Sara.
«Hi Bette… Listen, I wanted to tell you again how sorry I am about last night… You must hate me…»
Bette tried to smile, but it quickly faded. «I’m not mad at you… I’m the one who fucked up… I just spoke to your friend and hopefully, everything will turn out fine»
