The Triangle of Love – Chapter 2
Alice: No sugar and plenty of semi-skimmed, just how you like it.
Dana: Huh?
Alice: Your coffee?
Dana: Oh yeah, thanks Al.
Dana reached for her cup and brought it to her lips, not realising how hot the liquid was, causing her to burn her upper lip. She winced but tried to hide the pain from Alice, who was watching her every move.
Alice: Hot?
Dana: Yeah, that obvious huh?
Alice: Sure. So what do you want to talk to me about?
Dana put her coffee back down to let it cool. She wiped he burnt lip and looked toward Alice, ready to tell her.
Dana: Erm… I’m not really sure how to start.
Alice: I’m sure I can figure it out. Just start wherever and see where you end up.
Dana: Okay. Obviously, I’m with Lara as you know and things are great and everything but… I’m not sure how I feel.
Alice: Go on.
Dana: Well I know I love her. She’s amazing but she’s my first girlfriend. I don’t have any experience in dating and it feels like I’m settling for the first good thing.
Alice: So what are you saying Dana?
Dana: I guess I’m saying how do I know I have the best when I haven’t experienced anything else? How do I know she’s the one for me when she’s the only girl I’ve ever slept with?
Alice: Dana… you’ll know when you meet that person.
Dana: Well that’s the thing. I don’t feel that way about her. She’s a wonderful girlfriend and everything but I don’t get butterflies anymore when I see her. I don’t feel much when we kiss and I don’t have the desire to be intimate with her anymore. Al… I don’t think I’m in love with her.
Alice: Oh.
Dana: Okay, Shane you are definitely not. Any advice you could give me?
Alice: I guess you could talk to her. Make it clear to her how you feel. I’m sorry, Dana, I’ve never been in your situation. If I was you I would just break up with her to save us both the trouble but I know you have a bigger heart than me.
Dana: Al, that’s so not true. Why do you think I came to you? You have the biggest heart of anyone I know. I guess I could talk to her and see how she feels. Thanks, Al.
Alice: Well I hardly said anything but you’re welcome. I guess you’d better get home before she realises you’re not there. I’ll call you tomorrow, okay?
Dana: Okay. Talk to you later, Al.
They both stood up and walked towards the door, giving each other a small friendly hug before parting ways. Dana headed home while Alice cleared away the cups of coffee that they both forgot to drink. Alice chuckled to herself as she remembered Dana burning her lip. ‘Such a goof’ she thought to herself, still chuckling away.
While Dana was making her way home, thoughts of what to tell Lara were running through her mind. Should she tell her she doesn’t love her? Not in love with her? What if she thinks there’s someone else? ‘Oh God, why are relationships so hard?’ she thought to herself.
