The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Twelve
Bette couldn’t help the prideful smile that beamed at Alice. "When do you plan to launch this thing?"
"Friday. All day I’ve bounced around between working on an article for the LA Times, talking with Max about how to get the site set up, and typing up Tasha’s story. I’m gonna lead the site with a background into why I’m doing this and a story on Dana’s life."
"What are you going to call Dana?" Bette asked.
Alice’s soft brown eyes twinkled as she replied, "Sister Powerserve. You like it?"
Bette chuckled. "I do. I’m so proud of you, Al. This is a really great thing you’re doing."
"Thanks. And I’ve still got a lot more to do. So now that I know you don’t want to kill me for leaving you with Helena, I’m gonna run."
"Thanks for stopping by," Bette replied.
Alice breezed out nearly as quickly as she’d breezed in. As Bette returned to her lounger beside the pool, a familiar voice called to her from the evening’s early shadows.
"Bette?"
"Shane?"
"Yeah. You got a minute?"
"I do. Come on over."
"Cool," came the response, before Shane’s lanky, jean-clad figure appeared at Bette’s side.
"You look good," said Shane, examining her friend before taking a seat beside her.
Bette smiled. "So do you. You don’t look like shit anymore."
"Was I looking like shit?" asked Shane.
Bette nodded. "You were. How are things with Carmen?"
"Slowly getting better. She doesn’t hate me any more. She still loves me, but she doesn’t trust me. I’m working on that."
"You’re doing the right thing. You messed up, but you’re doing the most important thing right now…you’re working hard to correct your mistake. A lot of people would give up, but you haven’t. You’re gonna be okay," said Bette.
Shane thought on those words before she softly asked, "You really think so?"
"I really do."
Shane grinned at the woman who’d become more like an older sister than a friend. "Thanks. How are things with you?"
Bette shrugged. "They’ve been better and they’ve been worse. But I’m doing okay. That’s a step up for me because honestly…I don’t think I’ve been okay in a long time," she admitted.

OMGawd! I am torn between rooting for Tina or Helena on this story. Helena is really sweet. I like that. :)
I agree with bombastic…..I like this Helena. I say go for it! It will drive Tina freaking crazy. ‘evil grin’ lol
LOVE that text!!
The text sounds like Helena is flirting on Bette. Bette’s last thought before succumbing to sleep is Helena. something is happening here. Maybe Tina at this point should just prioritize Angelica’s benefit as having another parent and not to aim too high of being Bette’s friend, because like what I said on my comment from last chap, Bette’s heart is still frozen and it will be difficult to have a Friendly relationship with her other than being Angie’s other mother. I’m not losing any hope between these two and i will keep reading and watch how the story unfolds. Thanks a bunch for the post:)
love the build up and the tension. Glad Tina is getting a taste of her own medicine but I’m still hoping for a tibette reunion. Love the story even though I do not like the idea of Bette and Helena together.
I will say it again, i really love this story, but not sure if i can follow it with the Belena insinuations…..so i will probably wait til the end, and if its a Tibette fic, will go back and read!!! That is if i can keep from peeking at the chapters!!!
I don’t and never will like the idea of Helena and Bette together… Some one said it will drive Tina freaking crazy, I think that when Bette cheated on Tina that alone made T crazy so at this point I don’t think anything Bette does could be worst then being unfaithful…Tina has some making up to do there is no doubt but this whole mess came about when her partner of 8 years riped her heart out by betraying her in the worst possible way… That said I look foward to the next chapter.
My head (and Tina’s) exploding in three, two, one…… between any other couple this would be oh, so, sweet…. but between these two, nooooooo! Great story, PPS!
NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Just caught up with your story. I know there is alot of debate around the direction the fans of this story would like it to take and I’ve been really enjoying reading all the comments as well as the story. I think it shows just how much the L Word meant to everyone here, that a story revolving around a season that aired years ago can still evoke so much emotion in us. That said, I myself don’t care what story it ends up being-Tibette or Helbette-I just want to keep reading so please keep them coming!!!!
Hey MTS, I just love how the gang get together and sort out each other’s problem. There was Shane, the voice of reason, telling Bette that she was being a little irrational about Helena havng slept with Tina when Alice had been her friend for so long and a constant reminder that Bette had a past with Alice. This has always been Shane’s greatest strength, just telling it as she sees it.I am glad this provoked Bette to apologize to Tina as two wrongs never make a right.I do think Tina is finally dealing with Bette’s betrayal and doing the honorable thing by sorting out their co-parenting of Angelica.Again this chapter solidifies hte rebuilding of Bette and Tina’s friendship. Most interesting was Bette’s flirty behavior being mirrored by Helena.Fun times ahead.Just wonderful writing. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
Sorry, but I’m getting tiered of reading people using Bette’s affair as an excuse for everything Tina put Bette through after. I mean she was the one who decided to move back in with Bette again and being more than co-parents to Angie, but as we all painfully learned she did never really forgive Bette for her infidelity and used it against Bette too often. That said, I liked this chapter very much especially the interaction of Bette with Alice and Shane.
Excellent update. Thank you love this story.
I`m with jc sporrty,i will never like Bette with Helena.Great update.Thank you.
I’m glad Bette has things to look forward to… I really like this story. thanks for posting. :)
[Sorry if this is a double-post.] I always take a some time to think about a chapter and consider what I want to say. As a result, my comments may lag sometimes. To start, I am thrilled to know that this story is written in its entirety. I an so happy to know that a conclusion is in our (hopefully distant)future. As for Bette and Helena, I never thought that Bette would be able to be Helena’s friend after Helena’s successful campaign against Bette. I didn’t believe it on the show and (sorry)I didn’t believe it in you last chapter. BUT one of my favorite things about your story, MTS, is how it makes me ponder and pondering about TLW is a delight. Thank you for that. [You also inspired Talaula to start a thread on the General Fan Fic board.] After pondering, I now think that it is believable. If Bette were dispassionate ( which I know is a stretch), she would realize that: (1) even if Tina had returned to Bette sooner, based on Tina’s explanation of her “why’s,” the outcome would have been the same, (2) Bette hated working at the CAC, (3) Franklin would have eventually found grounds for removing her, (4) her own behavior contributed to her firing, (5) the pain she felt after her firing had just as much to do with her father’s death, her relationship with Tina and her fears about adopting Angelica as it did about losing her job, (6) her fears about the impact on her career were unfounded since she got the deanship at CU and they were aware of her, history, and (7) so far she likes and is enthusiastic about her job. So the only thing to be angry with Helena is Helena’s motivations and Helena has now explained those. SO, I am now ready for some Belena! Thanks for your insightful, complex and wonderfully written story.
Great Update!!! Thank you
