The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Forty-Two
Chapter Forty-Two
They made love again that night; teasing, tasting, touching, pleasing one another until exhaustion overtook them and sleep stole them from passion. Jet lag worked against Helena and she found herself wide awake shortly after dawn. Her crisp blue eyes studied the sleeping form of her lover and she traced the full lips with her fingertips. Dark curly strands of Bette’s hair fanned out over her pillow and she rested peacefully.
This woman was special to her. She wanted to protect her and comfort her. She wanted to be a better person because of her. As her lover’s chest rose and fell with the haze of a deep sleep, Helena slipped from the warm sheets. She showered quietly and quickly, grabbed Bette’s keys and headed out of the house.
Pulling up to the curb, she refused to let the anxiety in her belly keep her from the task at hand. She took a deep breath, licked her lips and walked right up to front door.
Her ringing of the bell was answered by a surprised Tina who stood there in yoga pants and a t-shirt. The sound of Saturday morning cartoons played in the background.
“Helena? What are you doing here?” asked Tina. “I thought you were out of town.”
The British woman nodded, her gaze serious. “I was. I came back yesterday. I’d like to speak with you. Do you mind if I come in?”
Though her eyes were puffy and swollen from unkind nights and lonely thoughts, Tina smiled softly and gestured her guest inside. “Sure. Come on in.”
“Thanks.”
Helena followed Tina inside and Angelica caught sight of their visitor. Her little eyes lit up and she stood from her seat on the floor, holding herself up on the table, and reached for Helena.
“I think she likes you,” said Tina.
Helena smiled then. She picked up Angie and kissed her cheeks before asking the little one about her day. She kissed her again before settling Angelica back down with her toys and pillows.
“You’re good with her,” said Tina.
Helena remembered why she was there and her smile faded. “Tina, can we sit down?”
The brow above amber eyes creased then. “Is everything okay? Is something wrong with Bette?”

Still reading! Well done.
I don’t know what else to say but I wanted to let you know that I am still here.
Don’t worry about those that are fleeing this great fan fic. I’m a loyal reader and will see it through to the “hopefully” happy end! Thanks for another great update MTS.
Bette Well now you can put on a pedestal Helena too.I just hope Tina is calm, not to grovel in the presence of Bette.
im of a opinion that it is tina’s own fault. yeah bette fucked up and cheated first but tina cheated on bette too. i am a loyal loyal tibetter but i am really enjoying this story and i have to admit i like bette and helena together although i am hoping for a tibette reunion in the end but if not i will still keep reading….good job very well written..thank you ppvs
I agree with bettefortina. I’m still here, MTS.
Chocolatechild checkin’ in and rep’n for this fic…you are rockin’ this story…keep up the excellent work and we will keep reading!! Cheers and PPS
I’m feeling like a pig in a mud…very very happy! you amaze me with every chapter, they’re soo realistic. Love how Helena care for Bette, how much she loves her that she was ready to go to T…and it shows how kind person she is, not wanting to harm T or let her find out from someone else. Love how sweet they are together..and adore how you continued the growth of the characters..we saw in tlw how they changed, but your verion is more realistic for me, as I said probably a zillion times by now. Adore it and adore them together. and tnx for posting!!;))
I am mostly a silent reader, but I had to let you know how much I am enjoying this story….I love TiBette, but I like the idea of Bette and Helena being together…I don’t understand how some people are taking this…This is a well written story, just a different one than the usual Bette Tina pairing. Thanks for the frequent posts.
Please keep posting, I really enjoy your writing.
This is fanfic. Readers need to understand that and try to appreciate the quality of the writing. I am glad this didn’t happen on the show but IMO it’s better than Bette w/Jodi.
MTS, I’ve been a silent reader of this story, but I wanted to come out of silence to let you know I’m still reading the story. I’m a TiBette fan, but I love fanfic and the different perspectives the stories give. Also, I’ve always thought you were a fantastic writer and still do. People shouldn’t take it so seriously. That’s why its called fiction! Keep doing what you’re doing, which is letting your creativity flow. PPS
Love this story! To those who can’t take the interaction between B&H, just remember it isn’t over yet. So my Belena heart isn’t safe yet. But if by some chance, the wind should blow the way of the Tibetter. I’ll still enjoy these Belena moments for what they are…heaven. It’s a great story, and I can’t wait for your next update!
MTS I love that you are a prolific writer. The story is going great. I am even enjoying the drama, as long as my two girls work through it all. I am such a happy reader! =) I am a Tibette fan and a Belena fan. Who I want depends on the individual story. Thank you for giving me some Belena in this truly lovely story. YOU ROCK, MTS!
MiamiGrl still reading. I’m a loyal reader. I’ve been enjoying this story and I look forward to what develops next. You rock!
Love your Helena and hope that Tina at least appreciates her honesty. Bette is just pitiful. Now she wants to talk to Tina?? Hoping Tina maintains her dignity and doesn’t give Bette the satisfaction of a conversation.
Getting better with each chapter! I’m a loyal fan of this fic, keep going. You’re doing absolutely brilliant :)
I’m hanging in with the story but there is something that Bette said that pissed me off a bit. No that she said it but she could say this to Helena but not to Tina. It really should make Helena think ‘what if she screws up’. This is what Bette said “We can’t change the past. We can’t undo what has been done. But if we let it bind us, then we’ll always live in its shadow. And I don’t want to do that with you. Let’s make this the last apology. It’s done. I’m sorry, too. But we didn’t even know each other then. We know each other now. We can’t spend the rest of our lives dwelling on that tiny period of our past. You make me a better woman, Helena. Let’s move on from that.” Now where was this little speech for Tina. This is what Tina wanted, wasn’t it?
In search of our own happiness sometimes causes other pain. Sorry for Tina at the moment, but that life fanfiction style :) thanks for the post
Journey1962 – I agree with your comment above about what Bette said to Helena and couldn’t say to Tina. There are a boat load of examples of that in this story most notably almost the entire conversation they had when Helena returned from Paris… It’s amazing how Bette can find clarity and be so expressive of all her feeling and emotions with Helena when she can’t even be civil and string two words together to talk to Tina in the same way. It makes me wonder if she even respects Tina at this point. There will be pain regardless but her insensitivity to Tina is really very discouraging as it speaks to they type of person that she is at her core. I know Helena is a great influence but now she’s making herself be defined by Helena. She can only find kindness and compassion in her hardened heart when it comes to Helena. It’s fine that she wants to be a better woman for Helena but she should want that for herself and it should extend beyond the ‘bubble’ they’ve created with each other. Everyone has their demons and their regrets but it seems these two are being lauded for theirs while Tina is viewed as the bad guy. BeLena belong together because they have proved that they are horrible partners to their ex’s and in my opinion both Winnie and Tina are better off without them. I’m just sorry there are children involved but hopefully they won’t be so selfish and self-serving where the children are involved so they can successfully co-parent and not leave these kids with emotional scars that will haunt their futures. It was noble of Helena to talk to Tina and I’m glad Tina now knows but it should have come from Bette; going to Tina now is just Bette’s way of making herself feel better now that Helena has opened the door. I don’t think she can offer Tina any consolation for how she has treated her thus far but I’m sure whatever the result it will be Tina that takes the fall. Still hoping that she’ll be portrayed with some level of self-esteem and dignity. That doesn’t mean she can’t express her anger, resentment, disappointment or whatever she’s feeling for the emotional turmoil that Bette’s cowardise, secrecy and deception has caused. I never thought I would say this when Helena was introduced into the story – but she’s actually turning out to be the more likable character between her and Bette. I guess that’s the advantage of an extreme makeover.
This is the first time that I have ever posted a comment on a story in the years that I have been reading and writing fan fiction. I feel compelled to say a couple of things. The first thing is thank you for writing and sharing your story, because writing for others is an experience in vulnerability through sharing. Second, I think the best way to offer suggestions is to do it in a tender and constructive way. That being said, if I may offer my suggestion for your story, it is that I am a TiBette fan. I think that the emotions of this couple run deep and stand for love conquering all and the notion of struggling through and ultimately make it. For these reasons and many others, I would like to see Tina and Bette come out of their relationship struggle couple a couple. I know their are twists and turns in all storylines from my own writing and that eventually, Bette and Tina return to one another in a healthier way that helps to build a new foundation for the two of them. Thank you in advance for hearing my opinion.
AMBIVALENT, you’re right. I’ve been reading chapters 22 and 23, is a sad proof to say the least. Bette could have any woman in the club ICE, more never Candace. Feel horny and say that it is vitiated, who wouldn’t know if could stop ever want Candace if she were left with it. Bette should feel repulsion for woman in which she became involved and in consequence destroyed her wedding. “I’m not blaming Candace here”. I wonder where stayed the repentance. Will that ever Bette repented than did, or your repentance was simply by having lost the convenience of marriage with Tina, are different issues, and that makes me wonder if Bette really ever was passionate about Tina. At least this story the feelings of Bette by Candace has not disappeared, Bette still feels very attracted by it. About HELENA. Bette hatred and now says be passionate about. Since the first meeting in chapter nine, the two have shown a special feeling, even Tina in chapter thirteen, realized the Bette, glossy look while Bette spoke with Helena on the phone. I’m TIBETTE, more really hope Bette is passionate about Helena as she says, and has demonstrated during this story. More if the AMBIVALENCE is so rampant that Bette start having feelings for Tina again, I can only say that Tina and even Helena, not deserves this disorder of feelings.Bette needs to grow up and stop hurting people, in which he says he loves.MORE PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE.
Where was Baby Angelica and what was she doing while that knock-down, drag-out confrontation was going on. I know that children can become very distressed if they witness a parent crying. Bette needs to go over and see to Angie. I’m hoping this Belena thing is a flash in the pan that boils over and flames out. The arrangement is too close for comfort, given their collective history. I’m still reading. The writing is very good and I’m still on the wagon. Thanks!
Sorry! this is it for me, I try to hang on but couldn’t. Good luck.
been busy the last couple of day s and missed a few chapters…wow, tina was really devastated with the news…on to read the rest of the new chapters
Painful for poor Tina. What drama. Wow-you can really write the intensity. Felt Tina’s pain. Now, please give her dignity. If Bette doesn’t want to be with her (now), then let go…yes, my Tibette heart still longs for a happy ending. I don’t know if I’m crazy to still be reading a Belena story…but your writing is good. Skipping over the too painful parts…but love your dialogue.
Painful for Tina, but at least she knows now. Where she goes from there is up to her, but I think she’s strong enough to properly grieve the end of her and Bette and move on. Helena was kind, I wonder if Bette can be? Thanks for the post. :)
Helena has way more guts and honor than I thought, gotta admire that
“And then there were three”… A comment about the readers left, or the number of chapters? Or something else? ;) I’ve been doing a bit of a re-read, and I’ve noticed a few inconsistencies that have yet to be resolved. As another passing reference to Agatha Christie, “I have a little idea.” Two actually, but I’ll wait until the end of the story. Many thanks for your daily posts, although I’d been hoping for another double-update…
Three? LOL! I’m still here, even though this is about as painful as one of my own breakups. Maybe that’s what’s making me so sick about this. I’ve been in Tina’s position, and when it comes out of left field, when you can’t even imagine those two people together, and then you realize it’s true…soul-destroying. I feel as sick for Tina as I did for Bette after the infamous bedroom door scene.
This chapter was so painful to read. I think, like socal, the reason why I’m having such trouble reading this story is because there’s so much pain involved. Pain that I can relate to. It’s difficult to watch somebody go through something like this & not be able to take their pain away. I’m rambling, but know that it has nothing to do with your writing ability & everything to do with my inability to watch, read, or anything someone in such deep pain. Maybe give me a heads up if more pain is coming Tina’s way. :-) And maybe lighten up some. One person can only take so much. Back to the comment. At least Helena had the decency to let Tina in on the secret. Please allow Tina some dignity & don’t make her a vindictive, tacky person who holds a grudge. Especially not in front of Bette or the framily. Give her that much at least. There will be enough sadness, embarrassment, & pity for her when the framily & everyone else figures everything out. Thanks for the story.
All through the glass smashing and the screaming and yelling and crying I couldn’t help but wonder about baby Angel in the other room. She couldn’t have missed all the commotion. This must have really upset her too? I just hope when Bette goes to see Tina that Angie isn’t subjected to their volume and drama. MTS, its like all I give a hoot about now is how this is going to affect baby A, growing up with all these nutters.
We all have a gift of something, we may not know it but others can see it. Your gift is your amazing talent as a storyteller in the words you write, this is your gift & I am so glad you share your gift with us. Loved this chapter for all the emotions it gives us, happiness for Bette & Helena, and the extreme sadness of Tina, I can feel their emotions in your words, you are amazing, keep on sharing this gift with us. PPVS :o)xx
Kudos to Helena for confronting Tina about her relationship with Bette. Loved the way Bette took care of Helena when she came back, but fearing Bette’s conversation with Tina, judging by her reaction towards Helena’s confession. As sindeelou2 I’m a little concerned about Angie, especially now that Bette is on her way over. Hopefully they can get her to a babysitter before starting their discussion, that’s definitely not something she should witness. Thanks MTS for this amazing story.
Brilliant story telling. I admire Helena in this chapter very much, fighting for what her heart strongly desires.
I have no words I read all your updates I’m still rooting for TiBette and find it hard to read this, but there’s just something about the way you write makes me want to keep reading.
Angie! Will not need to leave. Tina will be so quiet that Bette will be surprise.
ok, so I’m glad you are still writing for those of us that are reading because this is a great story. Helena was brave to talk to Tina first so she could absorb the brunt of her wrath. Bette is lucky to have a friend like Helena. Now whether they stay together as a couple remains to be seen (the TiBetter in me can only hope right?). To be honest I think Helena is best for Bette at this particular stage of the story. Either way you take it, I am here to stay.
oh Yes – Angie! Please slip in a line that she’s staying with Kit? :-) Doesn’t the concern for Angie tell you just how real your writing is to us?
Still here and enjoying every installment!
Wow this was hard to read but well written. I find it hard to believe that Tina called Bette I don’t know if I would have if I were in Tina’s position. I know for a fact that I would run away from Bette if she showed her face. Right now I think she’s the last person Tina wants to see. Loosing is hard and to loose gracefully is even harder. Tina’s going to have to walk a line in order to still maintain the co-parenting that I have to believe she still wants. I would probably move to put some distance between me and the new couple. Thanks for share this incredible story
