The Sound Track of Our Lives

The din of the surrounding people seems to shy away from the table full of friends. They sat in silence. The only noises the women produced was Shane chewing noisily on her bagel, Bette turning the pages of her art magazine, and if it was possible the echo of Alice plotting how to get the scoop on Bette and Tina.

    Flip.

    Chew.

    Flip.

    Chew.

“I demand to know what is going on!” Alice exclaims.

    Flip.

    “Don’t ignore me.”

    Flip.

“Oh right, I forgot that is what you do best.”

    Flip.

“You and Tina are friends but you don’t see each other or even speak to each other?”

    Flip.

    “We talk to each other.”

Alice jumps at the sound of Tina’s voice.

“Hello, everyone,” Tina says. She smiles at the gang while avoiding glancing at Bette. Shane pulls a chair out for Tina. “Thank you, Shane. I like the new hair cut.”

Shane nods in thanks. She doesn’t point out that it is the same style she has had for the last month.

“Tina, are you feeling alright? You look a little green,” Carmen asks.

“I am feeling much better. I was a little sick earlier.”

Bette glances up from her magazine. She frowns at Tina. “Can I get something for you?”

    “No,” came the curt reply.

Bette’s frown deepens, from one of concern to annoyance. “I just feel like I should be helping.”

“I really don’t want your help.”

“So you just plan to take this all on by yourself?”

    “What choice do I have?”

“You could let meus help you.” Bette’s eyes soften, pleading.

Tina sighs in irritation. She lets her eyes wander over the table. Her friends look bewildered and confused. Tina knows that Bette is right. She can not do this on her own but she did not know if she could ask Bette for help. She did not want Bette, of all people, to be pointing out her short comings. “Bette, I know that you are”

“Auntie Bette!” The girl rushes to Bette’s side almost launching herself into Bette’s lap.

“Stella,” Charlotte says in a warning tone.

“Sorry, Shashi. Auntie Bette, can I sit on you?”

Bette smiles warmly at Stella, “Of course you may.” She uncrosses her long legs, making a seat for the small girl.

    1. Gee V, (my father was a G.V.) you took so long I had to remind myself who Charlotte and Stella were. And now I’m just as lost as Alice and Shane. (If Shane’s that lost, I don’t feel so bad.) And you can’t leave Bette all broken down to mush like that, at least not for long. So even if your love life in other authors’ stories is keeping you busy, I expect another post soon.

    2. Well Valerie I am glad that you finally could write again. That chapter was so sad. Our B&T need to really talk because they really still do love each other. I hope you can write the next chapter and post it sooner than later. That is unless you are to busy with either Lara or Helena. LOL!!!

    3. i’m with funnyone, i had to re-read 3 last chapters to figure out what was going on…maybe tina ran after bette? and they can talk? post soon

    4. V — you remain one of THE best writers on this board bare no one else…this was so heartbreaking but beautifully written — put down that red head and get more writing done ..xx

    5. I really don’t know what to say to this. They are so sad and hurting but won’t give in to the other. Bette was an ass for running away and they should have talked and if they want too much longer it will too late for talk or anything else. So what else is new with these two? At some point, and it needs to be soon, one or both of them needs to stop and listen to the other. Painful, yes. Necessary, absolutely. Thanks for the post.
