The Newly Discovered SoCal Humminger Bette Porterius ~ Chapter 13

Alice was certain that the best show in the house that night would be Bette, the beautiful and unattainable host, and her interactions with Tina, the straight girl who was arriving with her boyfriend Eric, the cute but dull lawyer who was besotted with Tina.

She found a spot where she could see the entrance and waited for the first act.

    ~~

“Please excuse me,” Bette extricated herself from her chat with the first guests to arrive in order to greet the new arrivals.

“Dimitri!  I’m so glad you could come.”  She reached out her hand to clasp that of her newest guest. Bette’s delight was sincere.  Dimitri Karnoff’s appearance was a major coup.

“I am even more glad that you invited me,” Dimitri charmingly replied, a tinge of humor in his response.  He knew what his presence could mean for the somewhat new gallery.  “May I introduce you to my boyfriend Richard Spencer.”

Bette hid her surprise as she reached out her hand to the unexpected attendee.  The last she had heard, Dimitri had a wife and five children.  “So good to meet you Richard.”

“I am delighted to have a chance to see the Bette Porter Gallery and the famous Bette Porter herself.”

“Even if this place is impossible to find.”

Bette replied to Dimitri’s first snark. “I had considered renting klieg lights but decided low key was better.”

“Probably for the best.  In this neighborhood, you wouldn’t want to attract attention to the luxury cars in your parking lot.”

Snark two, Bette noted.  She was on alert but not yet worried.  Based on prior experience, she knew that Dimitri had to get a few nasty remarks out of his system before he could relax and allow for the possibility that he might enjoy himself.

“Please,” Bette moved to the side as she swept her arm forward, indicating the direction in which the guests should move as she guided them towards the bar. “An over-priced coffee shop has opened a few doors down. There is a clothing shop with seemingly nothing to sell.  A bar with designer beers on tap is on the next street, and the local small grocery is now carrying six brands of bottled water.  I think I may be ahead of the LA real estate curve.”

    1. Hee! I wish we had seen more of Bette, the consummate professional being dissembled by Tina the straight girl. I never quite got Tina’s reaction to the kiss. It was such a non-reaction… But you’ll make it all better, right, Spumogan? :D Thanks for the update!

    2. Alice saying “don’t worry” is just cause to do exactly that. It’s a conditioned reflex, like Pavlov’s dogs would have had. The dinner is going to be… I don’t know! I’m almost scared to see. (But you know I *need to see what happens.) I love this story, Spumoni. Post sooner than soon. Please. Thanks for this chapter. :)

    3. This is a wonderful story. I like the fuller portrait of Bette and Tina’s worlds. I liked the conversation about art and its significance. Thank you.

    4. You tease! Plod, plod indeed. I want my ‘their eyes met from across the room’ moment! :) Sorry i haven’t commented in a while, no excuse- i’m loving this story and watch for each update!

    5. Spumoni…Spumoni…sigh…not even a glimpse of Tina in this chapter…you love to leave us with your cliff hangers. OK…I’m hanging on till next time…BTW: I like the way you write Smart-Bette. You show her intuition and her calm demeanor – no nerves at her dinner full of important guests. Well written.

    6. Yum! What a delicious treat this was this morning. I enjoyed being led around the gallery soiree and eavesdropping on Bette’s conversations! And Alice is a work of art, priceless in her own right!~I loved and had to laugh when I read: “She glared at Alice, who mouthed ‘Don’t worry.’ ‘Fuck,’ Bette muttered…And worry was exactly what she did.” Brava! More soon, please!

    7. rather than “plod” i’ll think of it as a present slowly revealing itself :-) the outlines of this love story are familiar to us but each writer’s take is unique – & your writing is quite vivid. thank you and post soon

    8. Alice without a chaperon is always a reason to worry. Poor Bette or maybe poor Tina.:) Please post soon, because my impatient self wants to know what Alice means with “Don’t worry”.

    9. Hi, dear sweet Spumoni! *waving* First, we apologize for not getting here sooner to comment, but there is a new job we have to attend to, as you so NOW know. But here, we are. Hmmm We loved the way Bette handled those Art critics people. Gosh! It is so hard, sometimes, to give them the proper phrase so they will not run away. Art is NOT well appreciated around the world. There are places where it is NOT even a subject to discuss. They say that Artists, ALL of them, are not born in pots and we truly believe that. Someone who appreciates Art, as our beloved Bette Porter, has to struggle a LOT to convince those reluctant people to have a different picture of what they SEE. Therefore, we completely stood by her side on what she had to say to those difficult Art collectors. Jane was doing her role, being supportive to her boss and also trying to cope with the challenges of the night. As for what happened at the end, when Alice says that everything is taken care of… Hahaha We wouldn’t be SO sure about THAT. Hahaha You will never know what is cooking on Alice’s mind. *wink* Thanks for this wonderful update, dearest friend. Always eager for your next installment. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the loving JC, Eunichick, ZLFAN, T_Daze, Melrose231 and Tias Adoradas to Patpez)
