The Nearness of You, Chapter 3

“A week from Thursday?” inquired Tina.

“A week from Thursday,” promised Bette, beaming at Tina one last time before turning to make her way through the crowd.

“I’ll be waiting,” whispered Tina to herself as the masses engulfed the brunette’s retreating form.

Tina turned and followed the current of people up to the street where she turned uptown, headed for her friend’s apartment.  Lost in her thoughts, it was no time at all before she was greeting the doorman and riding the small elevator up to the eleventh floor, all the while grinning as she thought about her future date.

Bette clutched her bag on her lap, watching the buildings creep by as her cab made its way slowly through the heavy traffic.  As it turned around a curve in the highway, Bette was granted a view of the city against the clear, colorful sunset.  Nothing had ever seemed quite as beautiful to Bette as the backlit city, the black spires rising up into the pinks and oranges of the receding day.  Not until today anyway.  The smile returned to her face as her cab continued on, her thoughts filled only with the dazzling blonde.

“Porter!” shrieked a distinct voice as a shorthaired blonde lunged at Bette.  “How are you?!”

“Alice.  Alice! I can’t breathe!”  Alice relaxed her vice-like grip on the brunette and held her at arm’s length to observe her.

“Pretentious east coast living agrees with you.  You look hot!”

“It’s nice to see some things never change.  You always did prefer the outdoorsy side over the business suited one.”

“Especially that time at the beach when we-“

“-Don’t finish that thought,” Bette cut her off, self-consciously glancing around.

“Fine, but you know it was good.”  Bette visibly cringed.  “Have everything?”

“Yep, this is it,” Bette motioned to her lone bag.

“You’re a much lighter packer than you used to be, too… No more over-sized suitcase and a suit bag, just that?  Wow.  Wonders never cease.  Come on, I’m parked over there.”  They climbed into the blue Mini Cooper, Bette throwing some books, a sweater, empty coffee cups, and a squeaky toy into the back seat from the passenger seat.

    1. Hey NY! Great “filler” chapter. (As if this is filler.) You deserve all the praise on your writing. Maybe you should take your own advise when you think you shouldn’t be writing an NC-17…you know you’ve got skills. I for one think you should “risk” it! LOL! I love this story. More please!

    2. Okay so you were right, this one is a filler, but still a very well written filler. The judge has spoken. LOL You have set the stage for Bette and Tina’s meeting and I bet Dana will be there. Okay, now on to you winning not one but two awards….fantastic, so happy for you, and so well deserved. Oh and just thought I would mention that I hope a certain someone listens to her own advice!! I did and you know how well that worked out. Again many thanks my friend.

    3. Heck, I would pass out if either one of them walked into the same room I was in let alone actually sit at the same table with one of them. Good luck on your finals and papers.

    4. Hey woman! I might be first! LMAO! Anyway, I wanted to once again say congrats on your awards! Your writing is excellent and this chapter is no exception. I love the dialog and how Al jokes around! The bathroom comment…classic! Take care woman and I shot an e-mail back at ya! Hope the papers are going well and I hear from ya soon!

    5. Yay. Its back. I understand about finals.. funny enough, this is what I do on my breaks from studying. Can’t wait until they meet again. Its so adorable that Bette has a crush because Tina is obviously in awe of her. I like the mutual admiration society. Good luck on finals.. but PPS if you get the chance.

    6. Well done, NY, winning the award… you already know how much I admire your writing, and your awards were totally deserved. This chapter: great as always… Are you going to engineer a meet between Al and Dana as well? (*hoping so*) Thanks for the post, and I hope your final papers go so smoothly as to write themselves. Cheers!

    7. At last another chapter! LOL, doessn’t matter if its a filler we just need to read your writing! Congratulations on your awards, very well deserved, but I told you that already ;o)

    8. Yay! .. ooh can’t wait until Bette stops by, do you ever get the feeling Alice and Dana will be waiting in the wings to watch the love story unfold :) … Congrats on the awards hon, they are truly well deserved, hope writing papers is going okay, and I liked the comment about not listening to your brain … you’re totally right, I know mine talks b/s all the time *grin*

    9. Hey Hun, great big CONGRATULATIONS to you my friend. You are so very deserving of the awards that have been bestowed upon you. I’ll certainly chat with you more later, as usual. The chapter was lovely once again. I do love the way you have captured Alice’s attitude and interaction with the gals so properly. Hope your schoolwork is going well. I have two papers done and one to go!! Of course when I start my Master’s I am confident it will be even more challenging to say the least. Talk to you later.

    10. Excellent chapter. Your definitely have a flair for writing and dialogue. You capture their tone/voice so well. Congrats on your awards. Very well deserved.

    11. ok, i do have to tell you a secret: until very recently, i HATED tina and i HATED the idea of tina and bette together even MORE! ok, that probably wasn’t much of a secret. but thanks to YOU and a certain other challenger, these two are growing on me a little. this was a lovely piece–great dialogue and as always, a film like quality to it. i could see the crowds surge around bette. very cool.

    12. Congratulations on the awards. OK, I’m back in school myself so I’ll accept your excuse for taking 3 WEEKS to post. You know I’m not the kind to do the PPS thing and when I do, this is what I get! God! My poor nerves. At least Tina won’t have to rely on Dana to mount a whole espionage scheme to determine if Bette is gay. I suspect that sort of thing might turn out very badly. It occurs to me that when Bette and Tina were on the train they were on the same line but going the opposite direction (well, in a literal sense) as Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint in North by Northwest. (Film school, huh? I’m good for the old ones.)

    13. Hi NY. Nice little chappy from you. I always enjoy when Bette and Alice have screen time together… so I love that you make sure we get some of that. Congrats on your awards… they’re much deserved. Thanks!

    14. Hey, this was a very good chapter, NY. I have no idea why you said it was just a filler. I enjoyed it very much. Actually, I have always loved the witty banter between Bette and Alice. I knew you could write heartwrenching stories ( I still haven’t recovered from my reading of “The very thought of you” ), but it seems to me you certainly know how to write light-hearted moments as well… Anyway, Bette and Alice’s conversations always crack me up. It’s a shame this chapter was so short, though… Keep up the great work !
