    THE L WING  – CHAPTER 305

    NARRATION OF FIRST LADY TINA KENNARD PORTER

    　

    I have been taking a shower and getting changed into shorts and tee-shirt. We are finally on our much needed holiday. For a while I thought it was touch and go – we are going to be missing Thanksgiving which is always a big ceremonial occasion. Bette pardons a turkey and there is other things that happen. A couple of the Senior Staff pipped up and said that it was a mistake to miss Thanksgiving but CJ and Bette stuck to their guns. A statement was issued saying that the President was following Doctors orders and having a holiday – and pointing out that its our first foreign holiday in two years – I hardly think anyone is going to begrudge us a couple of weeks off. Plus its no bad thing to push Peggy to the fore standing in for Bette – even though she is going to record a Thanksgiving message. So we have left the press having all sorts of things to say – like we are going away to try and save our marriage – for some reason I have been bracketed with Nancy Reagan in terms of how eccentric I am supposed to have become. There is also speculation that Bette is hiding some serious illness – well that’s more the more nasty right wing press than any normal media – they are saying in their usual nasty spiteful shorthand that if Bette is a lesbian she must have AIDS. It has impressed me how much Bette has just shrugged all of this off – she has just kept on clearing her desk and giving out orders about what is to happen given various circumstances. The only person that she will be talking to other than my parents is CJ- CJ makes the call about whether we have to come back or not and I know that short of us being invaded by aliens there isn’t going to be that phone call.

     

    The place we are staying is right on  the beach – I measured it out and you only take 20 steps from the foot of the balcony of our room to the beach – the private beach. There is a boat moored out on the sea containing two of Bette’s detail – no one is going to be getting near us. Plus its been made very clear to the press than we do not expect to be disturbed and heaven help anyone who breaches that instruction – but of course they will try to – they just don’t have a chance of succeeding.
